PENNINGTON COUNTY, SD — Preliminary details on the accident which occurred at 7:30 this morning have been released by the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, who oversee operations conducted by South Dakota Highway Patrol.

The event, which resulted in the closure of the eastbound road of I-90 from Summerset to Rapid City until 10:15 this morning appears to have occurred when the driver of a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado headed westbound seemingly lost control of their vehicle, and crossed the median separating east and westbound traffic, striking a semi truck moving eastbound.

“The driver of the Chevrolet died from his injuries. The driver of the International Truck-Tractor was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries,” said DPS in their preliminary statement on the accident.

Names of those involved in this accident have not been released, as Highway Patrol attempts to contact families of both victims.
