Highway 85 Construction Between Belle Fourche & Spearfish Coming Soon

BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. – A shoulder milling and paving project is set to begin on northbound U.S. Highway 85 between Belle Fourche and Spearfish. The work is scheduled to start on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2025, and will impact traffic in the northern Black Hills region of South Dakota.

According to a news release, both the inside and outside shoulders on northbound Highway 85 will be closed during the project. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane through the work zone, and a speed limit of 45 mph will be enforced when workers are present.

The $1.5 million project is contracted to Central Specialties, Inc. of Alexandria, Minnesota. The work is anticipated to be completed by Friday, Oct. 31, 2025. This highway maintenance is a part of ongoing infrastructure improvements in western South Dakota.
