Harry Baird Niceley, III, a cherished soul known for his wit and kindness, passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer on July 30, 2025, in Rapid City, South Dakota.
Born on October 31, 1948, in Beech Grove, Indiana, Harry, who was fondly referred to as Baird by his loved ones, walked through life with a smile that could light up any room.
Baird’s early years were marked by both joy and tragedy; he was born exactly one year after his sister, Sue Ellen, who lived for only 24 hours. His parents, Harry Baird Niceley, Jr. and Florence Smith Niceley, welcomed him with love that knew no bounds. Five years later, the family grew with the arrival of his younger brother, Mark, completing the
family circle.
A proud graduate of Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, Baird’s musical talents shone brightly as he played the clarinet in both the Central Indiana Boy Scout Band and the Shortridge High School Band. His passion for music was just one of the many facets of his vibrant personality.
Baird’s life was a canvas of rich experiences and adventures. With his first car, a 1957 Chevy, he roamed the cornfields of Central Indiana, leaving behind memories etched in the laughter of those who knew him. His jovial spirit and friendly demeanor made him a beloved figure in his community.
He is survived by his three children, David, Chris, and Jena, who, along with their spouses and children. His first cousin, Gregg Niceley, was more like a brother to him; together, they found themselves in countless predicaments that turned into cherished anecdotes. Baird’s significant other, Joyce Clark, his brother Mark, aunts Jean Smith and Joann VanSickle, along with several cousins, also mourn the loss of a man who was the heart of their collective existence.
Baird’s Christian faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him with compassion and grace. His friends and family will remember him as the embodiment of the well-known quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson: To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children… to leave the world a bit better… to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded Baird indeed succeeded, touching lives with his enduring kindness and warm, friendly nature.
A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Harry Baird Niceley, III, lived with intention, loved with generosity, and laughed with his whole heart. As we bid farewell to a man who was the epitome of friendship and humor, we celebrate the legacy he leaves behind—a legacy rich with the love and laughter that he so freely gave to the world.
Upon his request, cremation has taken place and services will be held at a later date.
