Gunfire Incident in Rapid City Leads to Arrest and Seizure of Firearms, Drugs

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A two-day investigation into gunfire that damaged an apartment early Monday in Rapid City concluded with the arrest of a local man Friday morning, according to the Rapid City Police Department.

James Spencer, 22, of Rapid City, was taken into custody at 102 Waterloo Street, the location of the initial incident, in the early morning hours of October 31. He faces multiple charges, including Reckless Discharge of a Firearm, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute, Distribution of a Controlled Substance, Possession/Distribution of Drugs in a Drug Free Zone, and Receiving Stolen Property. Spencer was subsequently placed at the Pennington County Jail.

The incident began around 4:10 a.m. on October 28 when police were dispatched to 102 Waterloo Street for a disturbance report. Officers made contact with residents of a second-floor apartment who directed them to two bullet holes in their floor.

The investigation led officers to the first-floor apartment directly beneath, where they determined the shots originated from a bedroom. No injuries were reported as a result of the gunfire.

Upon entering the bedroom, police observed a handgun on the floor. Neighbors reported seeing multiple subjects exiting the bedroom window shortly after the incident.

Police obtained a search warrant for the bedroom. The subsequent search turned up 11 firearms in total, including at least one handgun that was determined to be stolen. Police also recovered a significant amount of marijuana, THC wax, and THC edibles from the bedroom, in addition to a large quantity of ammunition for the recovered firearms.

Spencer was booked at 12:44 AM into the Pennington Jail with charges for reckless discharge of a firearm, receiving stolen property, possession or distribution of drugs in a drug free zone, possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, and distribution/manufacturing of a controlleld drug. His court appearance is scheduled for November 3rd and 10am.
