RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City residents have an opportunity to shape the city’s future by providing feedback on the 2025 Rapid City Comprehensive Plan. A final open house is scheduled for Thursday, and an online survey is available for those who cannot attend. This initiative is a response to significant population growth in the Black Hills community, with the city’s population increasing by 20 percent since the last plan was adopted in 2014.
The open house will be held from 4-6 p.m. at the Dahl Arts Center, 713 Seventh Street. For those unable to attend, an online survey is active through next Tuesday, September 9. The full draft of the plan can also be reviewed online at plan.konveio.com/rapid-city-draft-comprehensive-plan. The draft will be revised based on public input before being presented to the Rapid City Planning Commission and City Council for adoption.
The city’s population has grown to nearly 85,000 and is projected to exceed 100,000 by 2040. This growth has created challenges related to infrastructure, housing, transportation, and public services. The comprehensive plan, which covers topics such as land use, housing, and public services, is designed to serve as a policy document to guide future development and address these issues. The city of Rapid City has hosted several public engagement events and surveys to develop the plan, which aims to provide long-term direction and strategies for the community.
