Governor’s Ag Summit being held in Deadwood

DEADWOOD, S.D. – The 2025 South Dakota Governor’s Agriculture Summit is being held in Deadwood this year, with a full agenda of speakers and topics Tuesday.

Governor Larry Rhoden delivered the opening address, highlight the current state of agriculture in South Dakota.

Rhoden says agriculture is strong in the state as technology allows families to focus their talents on specific facets of their trade.

A lifelong rancher from the Union Center area, Rhoden says he’s had the opportunity to travel internationally this month in hopes of expanding South Dakota’s agricultural footprint.

Rhoden also highlighted his “Open for Opportunity” tour, in which he is visiting cities across the state. His GOED Commissioner, Bill Even, spoke on South Dakota’s ‘Open for Opportunity’ growth.

Rhoden also awarded Glenn Muller of Davis as the 2025 Governor’s Ag Ambassador for his lifelong contributions to the pork industry and South Dakota agriculture.

Other speakers Tuesday included Brent Nelson, an Economist with the American Farm Bureau and Dr. Brett Kaysen with the National Pork Board.

On Wednesday, forestry is the topic as attendees will make three stops highlighting forest management, recent fuel reduction activities and current mountain pine beetle infestations.

The Ag Summit wraps up with a tour of the Spearfish Forest Products Mill Wednesday afternoon.
