Governor Rhoden arrived to the office of the Rapid City Post around 1:30pm to record an episode of Dakota Town Hall, speaking about his appointment, tour, and appointment of Lt. Governor. Tony Venhuizen.
(1:57pm) Governor stated that appointment of Lt. Governor Venhuizen was an “Obvious choice”, going on to elaborate and emphasize the importance of what he’s calling a “Reset Tour”, attempting to establish new relations with press, the legislature, and tribal groups.
(2:20pm) Rhoden said on the topic of his veto of a recent Childcare bill “what that bill did ultimately is that it took money from low income people and gave it to people with high income.” following, “We will work to improve the childcare shortage.”
(2:35pm) On HB1169, altering how ammendments to the SD state constitution will work in the future: “I understand the motivation and I agree, I think it should be more difficult to change the constitution”
Rhoden: “I swore to uphold the constitution of the United States and the State of South Dakota, I think this bill is in violation of both of them as they are written”
“Another reason, just from a practical standpoint.” Rhoden went on to speak on a conversation of an older woman on the practical difficulty of carrying the amount of district-based petitions, stating the increased manpower it would require, saying “If you’re a grassroots in-state group, it’s impossible” to practically find the manpower.
“one district would have power over the other thirty-four”.
(2:42pm) Biggest Barrier to Growth In South Dakota: “It’s an issue of workforce”
“We have the lowest unemployment in the nation, and 20,000 jobs available if the people were there”.
(2:45pm) On factors contributing to a potential 2026 run: “I will run if I truly feel I’m called to run”.
“My wife and I are still very much considering the possibility”, following “We should have a decision in the next few weeks”.
