STURGIS, SD – The Sturgis Scooper baseball team had trouble keeping up with Gillette in a 15-1 loss on Wednesday at Strong Field.

Gillette plated three runs in the top of the first inning and seven more in the top of the third, leading 10-1 headed into the fourth.

The Riders scored five more runs on three hits in the top of the fourth inning as rain clouds moved in, causing the umpires and coaches to call the game, giving Gillette the victory.

Carmine Newman earned the pitching win for Gillette (9-3). The righty allowed two hits and one run over four innings, striking out six and walking one.

Brand Matthews took the loss for Sturgis (3-11), giving up four hits and three runs over two innings, striking out three Riders.

Tate Johnson and Elijah Stroud each had a hit for Sturgis.

Gillette finished with 11 hits and were led by Ethan Hecker, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs.

The Scoopers are in action next on Friday, as they host Tea Area and Douglas in a doubleheader on Senior Night at Strong Field.
