RAPID CITY, SD – With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, another tradition comes with it: Galentine’s Day, and the Black Hills is alive with celebration!
Following in the footsteps of other Pop culture traditions, such as Seinfeld’s “Festivus”, Galentine’s Day comes to us from a 2010 episode of Parks and Recreation, in which it is the long-standing tradition of protagonist Leslie Knope (played by Amy Pohler) and friends. It is, in Knope’s words “The best day of the year,” and a day dedicated to the relationships between women, and celebrating the wonderful women in our lives– Friends, Sisters, Coworkers, Mothers, and Mentors.
Many businesses and organizations throughout the hills are celebrating the holiday through special events. The Neithernor Collective and Amazing Graze are hosting a “Sweetheart Social” for the goals, advertised as “a night of floral arranging, charcuterie styling, snacks, yummy drinks, and girl time!”. O&A Boutique, Valiant Vice, and Longevity aesthetics are collaborating as well on an event offering deals and drinks for girls wanting to celebrate each other and themselves alike. In Sturgis, Saldare jewelry is offering deals on permanent friendship bracelets in celebration of the event. Though not labelled explicitly as a Galentine’s Day event, the Matthews Theater in spearfish is offering an “Anti-Valentine’s Day” event on the 13th, an evening of figure drawing for experienced and beginning artists, perfect for a group of creative friends wanting to appreciate each others’ skills.
Regardless of how you celebrate, this holiday provides the opportunity for you to cherish yourself– or cherish the women in your life, and show your appreciation for them with heartfelt words, or maybe a mimosa… or two.
