RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Pennington County Jail is on the cusp of being fully staffed for the first time in nearly eight years, a development expected to alleviate staffing challenges and reduce costs for the community. The milestone comes as a result of concerted efforts in recruitment and retention, according to the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Brian Mueller credited the Pennington County Commission for providing the resources necessary to achieve the staffing goal. He also acknowledged the work of Human Resources and Training staff, along with supervisors and peers, for their contributions to creating a supportive work environment.

“Our staff has provided guidance, mentorship, and a supportive environment that have helped the Sheriff’s Office reach this staffing achievement,” Mueller said. “This is truly a milestone for our correctional staffing challenges.”

The near full staffing level is expected to lead to a significant decrease in overtime hours, which in turn can help reduce staff burnout and turnover. This will allow correctional officers to focus more on providing quality care and ensuring safety within the facility. The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office said it is committed to maintaining this staffing level to provide the highest level of service to the community.

Pennington County Jail Commander Corey Brubakken and Pennington County Commissioner Deb Hadcock were available for interviews. The Pennington County Jail is a key facility in the Black Hills, serving the needs of the Rapid City area and surrounding parts of South Dakota.
