RAPID CITY, S.D. – Firefighters from multiple agencies battled a 1.3-acre wildfire west of Stevens High School on Tuesday, June 10, with smoke visible from parts of Rapid City. The blaze, located near Cedar Canyon Camp and the South Dakota National Guard shooting range, was reported around 1:30 p.m. Over 40 structures were within a half mile of the fire.

The Johnson Siding Fire Department (JSFD) was the primary agency dispatched, supported by Rapid City Fire Department (RCFD) and South Dakota Wildland Fire. Initial pages also went out to Hill City, Silver City, Rapid Valley, Black Hawk, and Doty Fire Departments.

Upon arrival, Chief Smart of JSFD assessed the situation and determined that on-scene attack units were sufficient for containment, requesting only water tenders for additional support. Law enforcement was also requested for traffic control due to curious citizens impeding emergency vehicle access to the area.

Despite temperatures nearing 100 degrees Fahrenheit, crews successfully contained the fire to 1.3 acres. The cause of the wildfire remains under investigation.

JSFD extended its appreciation to all mutual aid departments, including RCFD, South Dakota Wildland Fire, and law enforcement, for their assistance.
