CUSTER, S.D. – Yesterday, emergency crews, including the Custer Volunteer Fire Department, successfully reopened Sylvan Lake Road (Highway 89) after a five-hour closure due to an accident. The incident, which required extensive cleanup, also saw the collaborative efforts of LJ’s Recovery & Transport LLC and the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SD DOT).

In a statement, the Custer Volunteer Fire Department highlighted the “remarkable and amazing” work of LJ’s Recovery & Transport in clearing the scene. The department also acknowledged the support of the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Custer Ambulance Service, Inc., Custer County SD Search & Rescue, and Custer County Communications for their assistance.

Second Accident Responded to by Crews

Shortly after clearing the initial scene and while returning to Custer, the same emergency personnel responded to a second incident involving a motorcycle accident. No further details on the motorcycle accident were immediately available.

The back-to-back incidents for emergency responders in the Black Hills area come just ahead of the region’s busy rally week, prompting the Custer Volunteer Fire Department to humorously state, “We are hoping the chaos is out of our systems and if not I guess you could say we are ready for rally week!”

Residents and visitors in Rapid City and the surrounding South Dakota areas are reminded to exercise caution on roadways, especially during periods of increased traffic.
