Pierre, S.D. – Thanks to a stretch of favorable weather, construction crews and park staff at Custer State Park are making strong progress on trail improvements around Sylvan Lake. To take full advantage of the weather window and stay ahead of schedule, the Sylvan Lake Shoreline Trail will remain closed through June 1, 2025.
Meanwhile, the Sunday Gulch Trail is set to reopen on May 16, offering visitors a chance to explore this iconic route just in time for peak hiking season.
These upgrades are part of the ongoing efforts outlined in the 2019 Sylvan Lake Master Plan, a community-driven initiative to enhance visitor access, protect natural resources, and improve amenities around Sylvan Lake. Work includes rerouting sections of trail, constructing new boardwalks and observation areas, and installing educational interpretive signage.
“We’re excited to be ahead of schedule and making great progress on a project that will benefit visitors and the park for years to come,” said Lydia Austin, Visitor Services Supervisor at Custer State Park. “While extended closures are never ideal, we trust that guests will enjoy the beautiful, refreshed trails.”
The park will continue to provide updates as construction progresses. Visitors are encouraged to explore alternative trails in the area during this time and check custerstatepark.com for the latest information.
