RAPID CITY, SD—Effective next Monday, the remote yard waste and recycling collection site adjacent to Fitzgerald Stadium will be closed to public access for a week for the upcoming American Legion Firecracker Tournament.
The Firecracker Tournament is scheduled for July 2-6. The Fitzgerald Stadium remote disposal site will be closed beginning next Monday and scheduled to reopen for public access July 7. The removal dates include two days before the tournament to allow for removal of the containers and cleanup of the area. Crews work to get the containers returned to the site the day after the tournament to minimize any service gaps.
The City’s Traffic Operations will place signage near the Fitzgerald remote site to advise the public of the temporary closures. During the temporary closure of the Fitzgerald Stadium remote site, the public is advised to drop off materials at the West Boulevard North remote disposal site or schedule drop off of materials before or after the tournament periods.
In May, the City Council approved a request from the Rapid City Sports Commission to remove the yard waste and recycling containers from the Fitzgerald Stadium location during three tournament periods including the Firecracker Tournament, Junior Legion State A Tournament July 31-August 3 and last month’s Veterans Classic
It is the third consecutive season the containers have been removed to provide additional parking for the tournaments, which draw large audiences.
