RAPID CITY, S.D. – A dedicated group of Rapid City residents has been taking action to protect a vital local waterway, gathering every second Saturday for a sustained cleanup effort along Rapid Creek. The volunteers, equipped with pink trash bags and waders, tackle the debris both from the banks and within the creek itself.
The initiative is described by participant William “Bill” Young as a “Coalition of people who give a shit about Rapid Creek.” The group’s work has revealed the diverse sources of pollution affecting the creek.
Young noted that the waste collected is not primarily related to the unhoused population, but rather points to broader sources. He cited that a significant portion of the garbage consists of refuse from local fast food establishments, discarded sports equipment like golf balls and tennis balls, and commercial items, including pieces of tile.
After their work, the volunteers meet at Lost Cabin Brewery where they receive a free beer and hold a competition for the most unusual item found that day. Past discoveries have ranged from the mundane to the bizarre, including a giant-size blue brassiere, McDonald’s toys, roller blades, a hot tub, and a water heater.
Despite the persistent challenge of pollution, Young offered a hopeful assessment following a recent cleanup. “I feel like it’s improving,” he said.
Residents interested in joining the cleanup effort can find more information and ways to participate by following the group on Facebook or on Instagram.
