RAPID CITY, S.D. – RCS Construction will begin recoating the Skyline Water Reservoir on Tuesday, May 27, according to an announcement from the City of Rapid City. The reservoir, located on US Highway 16 and Enchantment Road in southern Rapid City, will be out of service until July 1 for the preventative maintenance.
No interruption in water service is anticipated for residents.
The Skyline Water Reservoir serves higher elevation areas in southern Rapid City, including the Highway 16 corridor and Skyline Drive from Moon Meadows to Flormann Street.
John Leahy, project engineer for the City of Rapid City, stated that the recoating is a necessary part of preventative maintenance aimed at preventing corrosion and extending the life of the reservoir tank. This type of coating replacement typically occurs every 10 to 15 years.
The reservoir will be drained for approximately five weeks while crews apply multiple layers of specialized coatings to both the interior and exterior surfaces. Leahy detailed that the process will include a red primer, an intermediate color coat, and a final coating designed to match the reservoir’s existing color. All coatings are specifically formulated for use in drinking water applications. Following the application, the reservoir will undergo disinfection and testing before being returned to service.
This project is part of ongoing efforts to maintain critical infrastructure in Rapid City and the surrounding Black Hills region of South Dakota.
