RAPID CITY, SD – In observance of National Public Works Week, May 18-24, Mayor Jason Salamun will recognize the City’s Public Works Department and staff at tonight’s City Council meeting.

The mayor will share a proclamation declaring the period as National Public Works Week in Rapid City, urging all citizens to recognize public works professionals, engineers, managers and employees and their contributions in protecting the community’s health and safety, and advancing quality of life for its citizens.

There are 320 employees in the City’s Public Works Department, which includes the water, streets, water reclamation, solid waste, engineering, Rapid Transit System and Geographic Information System divisions.

“The City’s Public Works Department provides many critical services and oversees vital operations for our community,” said Public Works Administration Operations Manager Shannon Truax. “Public Works Week is a great opportunity to share with the public what those employees do every day in our city. They take great pride in their work with a focus on rebuilding, improving, and protecting very important systems in our City.

“They maintain transportation, water supply and treatment, water reclamation, stormwater, solid waste, public transit, traffic operations, engineering, and geographic information systems. These services are essential for our citizens. Without them, the citizens and visitors of Rapid City would not enjoy the amenities that are of vital importance to a sustainable and resilient community, and to protect the public health, high quality of life, and well-being of our people.”

Tonight’s City Council meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers of City Hall.
