STURGIS, S.D. – Fireworks season is almost here, and the City of Sturgis wants to remind everyone to enjoy the celebrations safely and responsibly.
“Fireworks are a fun tradition, but they also come with responsibility,” said Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department Chief Scott Lensegrav. “We want everyone to enjoy the holiday safely. Make sure you’re in a legal area, clean up afterward, and throw discharged fireworks in a bucket of water before placing them in the trash. Take a few extra minutes to be careful — it makes all the difference.”
From Friday, June 27, through Friday, July 5, local businesses are allowed to sell fireworks inside city limits — but only if they’ve got the proper license from the city. Sales must follow all state and federal rules.
If you’re planning to light off fireworks at home, remember to clean up any debris that lands on your neighbor’s yard, and if you live next to a public street or alley, you’re also responsible for cleaning up any litter in that area.
Breaking the rules could lead to fines or even misdemeanor charges under city and state law.
Here are the only times you’re allowed to use fireworks in Sturgis:
- July 3: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- July 4: 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
And don’t forget — the City’s big fireworks show will take place on Friday, July 4, at dark, with fireworks launched from the Fairgrounds on Ballpark Road. This is a change from past years when the fireworks show was on July 3.
