RAPID CITY, SD – The second annual chili cookoff – a benefit for the City Utility Initiative – filled the room at the Dahl Arts Center Tuesday night.

Dozens of chili’s were available for sampling for the ‘Good Chili, Great People, ‘A Stronger Community’ themed event hosted by City of Rapid City employees to assist residents with utility bills.

The fundraiser brought in $25,000 in donations – this includes $15,000 from the public which unlocks the $10,000 City Council match – for the City Utility Assist initiative which assists residents with keeping their utility services active. Final numbers, not yet available, will include donations made to St. Vincent de Paul through their QR code.

Utility Assist is a staff-driven initiative created to connect community generosity with local households that need short-term assistance maintaining essential City water, sewer and solid waste services.

The City partners with the Saint Vincent DePaul Society to administer the assistance program. Saint Vincent DePaul collaborates with other people of goodwill in relieving need and addressing its causes.

City officials indicate Saint Vincent DePaul has provided more than $20,000 in utility assistance to Rapid City customers dating back to October 1, 2025. Earlier this month, the Rapid City Council approved $10,000 in matching funds to support the chili cookoff fundraiser.

Attendees at the chili cookoff event served as the judges, casting their votes for People’s Choice awards in two categories and helping determine who earns bragging rights for having some of the best chili in the City.
