STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council heard from a buffalo safety expert at their meeting this week, who wants to host a buffalo safety experience for rally-goers in August.
T.C. Thorstenson proposed setting up a corral with a baby buffalo calf on or near Main Street during the 10-days of the rally.
He’s proposing hosting 15-minute demonstrations each day to educate motorcyclist and visitors about buffalo behavior.
Sturgis Mayor Kevin Forrester says while the idea is a good one, the logistics of having the corral downtown on Main Street is a dilemma.
After discussion, the council could not come to an agreement to approve the exhibition.
Forrester says a local business owner at the corner of Main and Middle Street offered to host the exhibition.
Forrester says if the landowner and Thorstenson can come to an agreement, it will have come back to the council for approval.
The exhibition is allowable under Sturgis City Ordinance as it would fall under an authorized livestock show or exhibition.
