RAPID CITY, S.D. – Emergency crews responded today to a boat explosion and fire on Sheridan Lake in the Black Hills of South Dakota, prompting a swift and coordinated effort from local agencies. The incident, which occurred this afternoon, required the rapid deployment of firefighters and hazardous materials specialists to manage the blaze and address potential environmental concerns.

Hill City Fire Department was dispatched to the scene after reports of the explosion and fire. Firefighters quickly coordinated with Pennington County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) deputies, who provided boat transportation to reach the distressed vessel on the lake. Once alongside the burning boat, firefighters were able to secure a rope and begin the process of extinguishing the flames while the PCSO boat towed the vessel back to the dock.

Upon reaching the shore, firefighters successfully extinguished the remaining blaze and began cleanup operations. Due to the presence of fuel in the water from the damaged boat, the Rapid City Hazmat team has been called to the scene to assist with containment and remediation efforts. Their specialized training and equipment are crucial in mitigating the environmental impact of fuel spills.

The cause of the boat explosion and fire remains under investigation. No information regarding injuries has been released at this time.
