Black Hills National Forest Christmas Tree Permits Now Available

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The U.S. Forest Service – Black Hills National Forest is making it easy for families to create lasting holiday memories this season. Christmas tree permits will be available starting today and will be sold through Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025.

Residents looking to cut their own Christmas tree from the Black Hills National Forest can purchase a permit for $10 each. The permit allows the holder to choose from juniper, ponderosa pine, or spruce trees up to 20-feet tall within designated areas of the forest.

The Black Hills National Forest, which encompasses over 1.2 million acres of varied landscapes in South Dakota, provides these permits to promote a memorable and safe outdoor experience for families and friends.

Permits can be purchased locally in Rapid City at the Black Hills Visitor Information Center. The center is located off I-90 at Exit 161 and is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Permits are also available at Black Hills National Forest offices and various local vendors.

Cutting a tree from the national forest is a long-standing tradition in South Dakota, allowing families to explore the natural beauty and cultural diversity of the Black Hills. The forest’s careful management provides many products and opportunities, including outdoor recreation, wildlife habitat, clean water, and timber products, in addition to Christmas trees.
