SPEARFISH, S.D. – The BHSU Yellow Jackets were able to power their way to a game one win in front of a packed crowd at Yellow Jacket Field Saturday, and with great pitching performances and a great day at the plate from the Seniors, BHSU was able to win game one before ultimately losing game two. BHSU continues to stay half a game up on the UCCS Mountain Lions in the conference standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
• In the top of the first inning, Jennavieve Goldsworth would lead off by reaching base on an error by shortstop Lily Simmons. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jacqueline Berkowitz. Gianna Pancost then reached on another error as the two outfielders ran into each other on a routine fly ball, which scored Goldsworth on an unearned run. Laci Peskey was able to get the next two batters out and hold the damage to 1-0. Both Tyler Whitlock and Carly Reyes Mims were hit by a pitch to lead off the first inning. Ashlynn Pauwels reached on an error by the UCCS shortstop, which scored Whitlock and tied the game at 1-1. Peskey hit a single to advance the runners and load the bases before Audrey Fouras walked in a run to give BHSU a 2-1 lead after the first inning.
• Both Laynee Case and Halley Redd singled to start the second inning. Bailey Olerich reached on a throw that took the first basemen off the plate and loaded the bases with one out. Goldsworth would hit a sacrifice fly that scored Case and Redd would advance to third on a dropped catch by the second basemen on the pickoff play and UCCS would tie the game at two heading into the third inning.
• In the bottom of the third inning, Ashlynn Pauwels hit a solo home run to lead off the frame and give BHSU a 3-2 lead.
• That would remain the score until the bottom of the fifth inning when Desi Hernandez walked with one out. Pauwels would hit a short double to advance the pinch runner Andria Fitch to third and Peskey would hit an RBI single to score Fitch and hold Pauwels at third. With two outs, Bond walked three consecutive Yellow Jacket batters to score two more runs for the Yellow Jackets and give BHSU a 6-2 lead.
• In the top of the sixth, UCCS started with a single from Tayler McCombs, who got to second on a groundout by Case. Redd hit an RBI single through the middle to score McCombs and cut the lead to 6-3. That was how the score ended as Peskey was able to strike out McCombs in the seventh to give BHSU the 6-3 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED- GAME 2
• No runs were scored in the first inning, so Case led off the second inning by reaching base on an error by the shortstop. Redd singled to advance Case to second and Katelyn Kilgore walked to load the bases. Olerich reached on an error as Carli Maley dropped the catch at home that would’ve got the lead runner out, but Case scored and UCCS had an early 1-0 lead. Paige Goodell got out of it though as she would get Goldsworth to fly out and then Whitlock would make a perfect throw to the plate to tag out Redd, who was trying to score to end the inning.
• Berkowitz would single to begin the third inning and would be joined on the bases by Gianna Pancost who singled right behind her. McCombs would hit a sac bunt to advance the runners and put them on second and third. Case would groundout to shortstop which held the runners, but the shortstop would miss the throw to first high again, which allowed the lead runner to score and give UCCS a 2-0 lead. Case stole second and Edyn Lopez would hit a single to score Pancost and give UCCS a 3-0 lead heading to the fourth.
• In the fourth, Olerich would single and steal second. Berkowitz reached on another error and made it to second, which allowed Olerich to get to third. With two outs, McCombs hit a double to score both runners and grow UCCS’s lead to 5-0.
• After no runs scored in the next four frames, BHSU would take the plate in the bottom of the sixth. Pinch hitter Adreanna Lance singled to commence the inning and would make it to second on a walk by pinch hitter Katelyn Jarzobski. Whitlock would hit a double to score Lance and Hernandez was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Pauwels, who struck out to end the threat, but BHSU had cut the lead to 5-1.
• In the top of the seventh, Pancost walked, and pinch runner Kaylee Holland stole second. Case singled on a bunt to advance Holland to third and stole second. Redd hit a double down the left field line and both Holland and Case scored to give the Mountain Lions the final 7-1 lead that ended the game as BHSU went 1-2-3 in the seventh.
