Omar Cooper Jr’s toe-tap TD keeps No. 2 Indiana’s undefeated season alive vs Penn State in 27-24 win

Omar Cooper Jr. jumped to catch a pass from Fernando Mendoza in the back of the endzone, sweeping his inside foot within the field of play to save No. 2 Indiana from its first loss of the season against a downtrodden Penn State team that almost denied the Hoosiers their first Happy Valley win in school history. Mendoza connected with the leaping Cooper with 36 seconds remaining to put Indiana ahead 27-24. Penn State rallied to take the lead 24-20 late in the fourth quarter after being down by 13 points in the third. Ethan Grunkemeyer connected with Nicholas Singleton for a 19-yard score.

Penn State fires coach James Franklin amid midseason free fall in a lost season

James Franklin is out at Penn State. The school fired the longtime head coach on Sunday, less than 24 hours after a 22-21 home loss to Northwestern. Terry Smith will serve as the interim head coach for the rest of the season. The Nittany Lions began the year with hopes of winning the national title. Those hopes evaporated by early October amid a string of losses. Penn State, which reached the CFP semifinal 10 months ago, lost at home to Oregon in overtime in late September. A road loss at UCLA followed.

Penn State quarterback Drew Allar is out for the season with an injury

Drew Allar came back to Penn State for his senior season determined lead the Nittany Lions to a national championship. Now, with hopes gone for winning their first NCAA football title since 1986 after a third straight loss, the strong-armed quarterback will have to watch from the sideline the rest of the way. Allar suffered an apparent leg injury on a third-down play late in Penn State’s 22-21 loss to Northwestern on Saturday. He limped off the field with help, was replaced by backup Ethan Grunkemeyer and was ruled out for the rest of the season.

Oregon outlasts Penn State 30-24 in double overtime

Dillon Thieneman intercepted Drew Allar’s pass in the second overtime period and No. 6 Oregon outlasted No. 3 Penn State 30-24. Jamari Johnson ran for a touchdown in overtime, Dierre Hill Jr. caught a touchdown pass, Jordan Davison ran for another score and Atticus Sappington kicked a field goal for the Ducks (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) who won their FBS-leading 23rd straight regular-season game. Trailing 17-10, Penn State got the ball with 7:07 left to play and drove down the field where Allar hooked up with Devonte Ross for a 7-yard touchdown to force overtime.
