Democrat Abigail Spanberger backs Virginia legislature’s redistricting push

Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic candidate for Virginia governor, says that she doesn’t oppose a push by the state’s Democratic-controlled legislature to redraw congressional districts ahead of next year’s midterm elections. Virginia Democrats on Monday began taking steps to change the state’s constitution to allow for a new congressional map, a move that must ultimately be approved by voters before it becomes law. The change is designed to counter President Donald Trump’s push to create more partisan districts in several Republican-run states. Spanberger said in an interview with The Associated Press that she would not stand in the way of the Democratic leaders in the state General Assembly.

Trump’s GOP seizes on violent rhetoric from Virginia AG candidate as high-stakes elections loom

Republicans have seized on recently unearthed violent rhetoric from Virginia’s Democratic candidate for attorney general in a bid to re-shape the state’s governor’s race — and tarnish the Democratic Party nationally. President Donald Trump, like Republicans across Virginia and beyond, has called for Democratic state attorney general candidate Jay Jones to quit the race after the publication of private text messages from 2022 suggesting that a political opponent gets “two bullets to the head.” Trump described Jones as a “radical left lunatic” and sought to link him to Rep. Abigail Spanberger, Virginia’s Democratic candidate for governor. Jones has apologized repeatedly for his violent rhetoric. Republicans hope the scandal might tilt the election next month in their direction.

Who’s more excited to welcome this Trump ally to Virginia – Democrats or Republicans?

The Virginia governor’s race may be the first political test of President Donald Trump’s slashing of the federal workforce through DOGE. Virginia was hit hard by the cuts, with an estimated 23,000 people losing their jobs. The issue is getting extra attention as a Trump ally campaigns with Republican candidate Winsome Earle-Sears in suburban Richmond on Friday. Vivek Ramaswamy is a former Republican presidential contender who is now a candidate for Ohio governor. But it is Ramaswamy’s short-lived tenure as co-leader of Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency that has Democrats fired up. Democrat Abigail Spanberger has called on Earle-Sears to cancel the event in light of Ramaswamy’s role as “one of the chief architects of the DOGE effort.”
