Sweden’s Maja Stark wins the U.S. Women’s Open for her first major championship

Maja Stark of Sweden continued the steady play she demonstrated all week to win the U.S. Women’s Open on Sunday at Erin Hills for her first major championship. Stark shot an even-par 72 to finish at 7-under 281, two strokes ahead of top-ranked Nelly Korda and Japan’s Rio Takeda. Stark earned $2.4 million in the biggest event of the women’s golf season. The 25-year-old Stark became the sixth Swede to win a women’s major, and the first since Anna Nordqvist in the 2021 Women’s British Open. The former Oklahoma State player is the first Swede to win a U.S. Women’s Open since Annika Sorenstam in 2006. Korda closed with a 71, and Takeda had a 72.

Mao Saigo shoots 66 to take US Women’s Open lead as she chases her 2nd major title of the year

Mao Saigo already won her first major title this year. She’s putting herself in position for another at U.S. Women’s Open. Saigo shot a 6-under 66 on Friday to take second-round lead at Erin Hills, At 8-under 136, the 23-year-old Japanese player had a three-stroke advantage over a group of six led by top-ranked Nelly Korda. Saigo won Chevron Championship in a playoff outside Houston just over a month ago for her first LPGA Tour title. Korda, who has never finished higher than a tie for eighth in the U.S. Women’s Open, had a 67.  That’s the best round she’s had in the event. She was 5 under with Hinako Shibuno, Sarah Schmelzel, Maja Stark, Yealimi Noh and 2020 champion A Lim Kim.

6-way tie for 1st-round lead at 4-under 68 in US Women’s Open at Erin Hills

Angel Yin started experimenting with a new putter about a month ago and decided to use it in a tournament for the first time at the most prestigious event in women’s golf. The move worked well in the first round at Erin Hills. Yin made a 13 1/2-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th for a 4-under 68 and a share of the U.S. Women’s Open lead with 2020 champion A Lim Kim, Jinhee Im, Yealimi Noh, Rio Takeda and Julia Lopez Ramirez. Lopez Ramirez won consecutive Southeastern Conference titles at Mississippi State in 2023 and 2024, but she suffered a major setback earlier this year when what she initially believed was a bout of food poisoning actually was a case of appendicitis.

Orioles GM Elias speaks 3 days after firing manager, says he’s evaluating reasons for team’s decline

Orioles general manager Mike Elias has broken his silence about his decision to fire manager Brandon Hyde. Elias said Tuesday he’s doing an across-the-board evaluation to determine what has caused Baltimore’s remarkably rapid decline. Elias fired Hyde on Saturday, and since then, the team has gone 0-4. Until Tuesday, only players and interim manager Tony Mansolino had answered questions about the firing. Elias praised Hyde for getting the Orioles back into contention but said the time had come for a new voice. He says he didn’t take questions earlier because it’s been “a pretty hectic few days.”
