North Texas in AP poll and could make push to 12-team College Football Playoff as G5 rep

North Texas is in the AP poll for the first time since 1959, but it hasn’t cracked the College Football Playoff rankings yet. The 9-1 Mean Green, ranked No. 22 in the AP poll, have the nation’s highest-scoring offense. They play Rice on Saturday and end the regular season against Temple. Tulane, a conference foe, is the only Group of Five team in the CFP rankings. North Texas could face the Green Wave in the American championship game. The Mean Green have rebounded from their lone loss to South Florida by winning four straight games.

Cowboys’ hearts still heavy after the death of Marshawn Kneeland, coach Brian Schottenheimer says

Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer says his heart and the hearts of his players are still heavy after the death of defensive end Marshawn Kneeland. The coach says they continue to share, laugh and cry after the loss of their teammate. Schottenheimer held his first media availability Wednesday since Kneeland’s death during their bye last week. The Cowboys will resume practice Thursday. Police in Frisco said Kneeland was found dead early last Thursday of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. Players were off Wednesday after two days with team meetings and breakout sessions with grief specialists. There was also a memorial candlelight vigil Tuesday night.

Iowa State TE Brahmer gets in end zone a week after collapsing on field

Iowa State tight end Benjamin Brahmer insists that things looked a lot worse than they were when he passed out on the field after getting up from a big hit in the previous game. A week later, Brahmer was back in the end zone Saturday. Brahmer caught a pass around the 11 with his back to the goal line, then then lunged through four defenders while extending his 6-foot-7 body into the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown in the first quarter of the Cyclones’ 20-17 win at TCU that snapped a four-game losing streak.

Marvin Harrison Jr. converts long 3rd downs and scores TD for Cardinals in 27-17 win over Cowboys

All three catches Marvin Harrison Jr. had in the first quarter converted long third downs for the Arizona Cardinals. That certainly helped set an early tone against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night. Harrison went on to a career-high seven catches for 96 yards, including a 4-yarder from backup quarterback Jacob Brissett for the game’s touchdown, and the Cardinals finished 7-of-9 on third-down conversions in the first half of a 27-17 win that ended their five-game losing streak. After the three early conversions, Harrison had a 4-yard TD catch early in the second quarter that put Arizona ahead 10-0.

Dallas Stars go into home opener under Glen Gulutzan still looking to compete more after 2-0 start

Stars coach Glen Gulutzan has repeatedly said that he wants them to compete more in every aspect. That message was prominent even after Dallas won its first two games on the road against division opponents it also beat in the playoffs last season. The Stars finished practice Monday with players going through a 1-on-1 drill battling for pucks. Dallas plays its home opener Tuesday night against Minnesota. It will be Gulutzan’s first game behind the Stars bench since the 2013 season finale, before he was fired by then-new general manager Jim Nill. The same GM brought him back as the new Stars head coach in July.

Oklahoma QB John Mateer throws 3 interceptions vs. Texas in return 3 weeks after hand injury

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer threw for 202 yards and three interceptions in his return for sixth-ranked Oklahoma. That came in a 23-6 loss to Red River rival Texas on Saturday, only 17 days after having surgery on his throwing hand. Mateer completed 20 of 38 passes and says he felt fine physically. The junior transfer quarterback says he just didn’t play good enough for the 5-1 Sooners. He got hurt three weeks ago in a win over Auburn before surgery during the bye week and not playing last week.

Unranked Texas looks more like the preseason No. 1 it was in win over rival No. 6 Oklahoma

This certainly looks more like the preseason No. 1 team that Texas was before two early losses sent it plummeting all the way out of the AP Top 25. The Longhorns beat Red River rival sixth-ranked Oklahoma 23-6 on Saturday. It saves their season for now. The 4-2 Longhorns should be back in the next AP poll Sunday. More importantly, they avoided a loss that likely would have ended any realistic chance of getting into the College Football Playoff for the third year in a row.

The team then was still known as the Eagles, and it was nearly a decade before “Mean” Joe Greene would be the school’s only consensus All-American. The Mean Green are now 5-0 with a redshirt freshman quarterback who never started a varsity game in high school and a roster with 50 new transfers. They host 24th-ranked South Florida on Friday night. Drew Mestemaker has thrown for 1,247 yards and 11 touchdowns. Glen Gulutzan has returned to a much different situation in Dallas. And the Stars now have a more seasoned coach that has been close to a Stanley Cup title since they let him go 12 years ago. In his initial stint with the Stars, Gulutzan was a first-time head coach overseeing an aging team basically run by the league while going through bankruptcy, an ownership change and a lockout-shortened season. When the Stars open their season Thursday night at Winnipeg, the 54-year-old Gulutzan is back in charge of a team that has been to the Western Conference final each of the past three seasons.

He favors that over having guaranteed multiple bids for all the power conferences. McDavid says he didn’t touch the West trophy last year, and Edmonton didn’t win the Stanley Cup. Florida didn’t touch the Prince of Wales Trophy after wrapping up the East final this week. The Panthers also didn’t touch the East trophy last year and won the Cup. But in 2023, they lost in the Stanley Cup final after celebrating the East touching that trophy.
