No. 14 Oklahoma, Mateer get back on track with a 26-7 win over South Carolina

John Mateer threw for 150 yards and a touchdown while Oklahoma’s defense sacked South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers six times in the 14th-ranked Sooners’ bounce-back 26-7 victory. Oklahoma’s perfect start ended last week with a 23-6 loss to Red River rival Texas. The Sooners used a steady offense and a best-in-the-nation defense to get back on track against the Gamecocks. Briscoe, JGR, Toyota all make big statements at Darlington Raceway to start the NASCAR playoffs

Chase Briscoe made a big statement in NASCAR’s opening playoff race at Darlington. Joe Gibbs Racing and Toyota also showed that this won’t be like past postseasons. There were six Toyotas in the top seven, including those of playoff contenders Reddick and Bubba Wallace of 23XI Racing. Team Penske drivers have won the previous three Cup Series crowns and Hendrick teams the two before that.

A season ago, Briscoe used a late-pass at Darlington to win and get into the postseason for soon-to-be-shuttered Stewart-Haas Racing. Briscoe drives for Joe Gibbs Racing now and understands making the playoffs is only the first step of what his new program expects to accomplish. Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron starts as the regular-season champion. Denny Hamlin and Shane van Gisbergen each have a series-high four wins this season. Hamlin is making his 19th postseason appearance as he tries for his first title.
