Aaron Judge helped the New York Yankees with his arms even before saving a run with his glove, signaling Max Scherzer’s pitch tipping ahead of Ben Rice’s three-run homer in a 4-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Standing off second base, Judge spread his arms ahead of a pair of Scherzer changeups in the first inning after getting a signal from Cody Bellinger, the runner at first. Rice prolonged his at-bat with a long foul ball on the full-count pitch, then homered off a fastball on the 10th pitch of the at-bat for a 3-0 lead.

Yankees bench struggling shortstop Anthony Volpe for at least 2 games

Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe was benched Sunday night for the finale of a critical four-game series against the rival Boston Red Sox. Following a 7-2 victory that prevented a four-game sweep, Volpe said he won’t start Monday night against Washington, either, but he expects to return to the lineup “after that.” Volpe is mired in a 1-for-28 slump and leads the American League with 17 errors. New York started recently acquired utlityman José Caballero at shortstop Sunday night. Volpe entered on defense in the eighth inning, and Caballero moved to right field. Volpe is hitting .208 with 18 homers and 65 RBIs in 129 games this season. He has started 125 at shortstop and was not in the starting lineup for only the fifth time all year.

Mariano Rivera tears Achilles in Yankees Old-Timers’ Day game and needs surgery

Mariano Rivera has torn his Achilles while chasing a flyball at the New York Yankees’ Old-Timers’ Day game. His agent, Fern Cuza, says the 55-year-old closer, baseball’s career leader in saves, will have surgery within a week. Rivera had singled off former teammate Andy Pettitte before the injury occurred during an at-bat by Willie Randolph. The Yankees brought back the Old-Timers’ Day game for the first time since 2019. Rivera, a Hall of Famer, was playing in the event for the second time. He became the first unanimous pick for the Hall of Fame in 2019 after helping the Yankees win five World Series titles.

Roger Clemens returns to Yankee Stadium, questions about Mike Piazza bat-throwing incident resurface

Roger Clemens came back to Yankee Stadium on Saturday, and so did the questions about his bat-throwing incident with Mike Piazza in the World Series 25 years earlier. Piazza was batting against Clemens in the first inning of Game 2 of the 2000 World Series when his bat shattered along the first-base line. Clemens picked up part of it and fired it toward the Hall of Fame catcher. Clemens made his debut in the Yankees’ Old-Timers’ Day game on Saturday and faced four batters in the first exhibition game of the event since 2019. His manager on the 2000 championship team defended the pitcher’s actions in that at-bat against Piazza.

Paul Goldschmidt regrets bad throw in 12-5 loss to Phillies, Yankees’ 9th error in 4 games

Paul Goldschmidt wishes he had played it differently during the Yankees’ game against the Phillies. Instead of attempting an off-balance throw to home plate, he believes he should have gone for the out at first base. His throw not only failed to get the second out but was the Yankees’ ninth error in four games. The Yankees committed two errors in their 12-5 loss to Philadelphia, which dropped them 5 1/2 games behind AL East-leading Toronto. Manager Aaron Boone said Goldschmidt was trying to make a play, but it was a mistake.

Yankees rally past Mariners 6-5 in 10 innings after going hitless against Bryan Woo until the 8th

Anthony Volpe scored the winning run with an acrobatic slide on Aaron Judge’s shallow sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, and the New York Yankees rallied past Seattle 6-5 after Mariners pitcher Bryan Woo took a no-hitter into the eighth. Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled leading off the eighth for New York’s first hit. Woo quickly allowed another single and was lifted after Austin Wells’ sacrifice fly shaved Seattle’s lead to 5-1. Pinch-hitter Giancarlo Stanton made it 5-3 with a two-run homer off Matt Brash, and the Yankees were down to their final strike multiple times before tying it on Wells’ two-run single off All-Star closer Andrés Muñoz in the ninth.

Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh: All-Star closer Andrés Muñoz was tipping pitches against Yankees

Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh thinks All-Star closer Andrés Muñoz was tipping pitches when he squandered a two-run lead in the ninth inning against the New York Yankees. Muñoz was handed his sixth blown save in 27 opportunities this season after starter Bryan Woo held the Yankees hitless into the eighth. With the Mariners holding a 5-3 lead, Muñoz entered in the ninth and loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a two-out walk. Standing at second base while Austin Wells batted, Cody Bellinger waved his arms when Muñoz threw his slider. Wells worked the count full and lined a fastball into right field for a two-run single that tied it. New York then scored in the 10th to win 6-5.

Chisholm singled through the right side on a 1-2 changeup. He and Woo, who will be teammates on the American League All-Star squad next week, patted each other on the rear end near first base. Woo opened the game by walking Jasson Domínguez and Trent Grisham, then retired 20 straight batters. Following the walks, Woo struck out Aaron Judge and retired Chisholm on a double play.

Clarke Schmidt pitches seven hitless innings, Yankees lose no-hit bid vs. Orioles in the eighth

Clarke Schmidt walked off the mound after getting through his seventh hitless inning and exchanged a glance with New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone in the dugout. That was it for Schmidt. Done for the day. While the right-hander was disappointed, he certainly understood Boone’s decision to take him out of the game even with a no-hitter going. Schmidt was pulled after tying a career high with 103 pitches, and the Yankees lost a no-hit bid Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles when Gary Sánchez singled to start the eighth off JT Brubaker.
