Edwards’ short TD run in overtime leads West Virginia over Pittsburgh 31-24 in the Backyard Brawl

Tye Edwards rushed for three touchdowns, including a 1-yarder in overtime to lift West Virginia to a 31-24 win over Pittsburgh. West Virginia improves to 2-1 and bounced back from a pitiful performance a week ago at Ohio. Quarterback Nicco Marchiol was benched for five series in the second half before leading West Virginia on a furious comeback. The Mountaineers scored 10 points in the final five minutes of regulation to send it to overtime. After Edwards’ touchdown run, Pittsburgh’s Eli Holstein threw incomplete on fourth down to end the game. Pittsburgh falls to 2-1 and lost for the fourth straight time in Morgantown.

Marchiol and White shine, West Virginia beats Robert Morris 45-3 in Rich Rodriguez’s coaching return

West Virginia beat Robert Morris 45-3 in the return of Rich Rodriguez as West Virginia’s coach. Nicco Marchiol passed for one touchdown and threw for another, Jahiem White had two short TD runs for the Mountaineers. Heavy favorite West Virginia lost fumbles on three straight drives in the second quarter and led its Championship Subdivision opponent 10-3 at halftime. White had TD runs of 1 and 4 yards in the third quarter. Marchiol completed 17 of 20 passes for 224 yards. Rodriguez coached the Mountaineers from 2001 to 2007. He was hired last December to take over for the fired Neal Brown.
