NFL widows struggled to care for former players with CTE. They say a new study minimizes their pain

Dozens of widows and other caregivers for former NFL players diagnosed with CTE say a published study is insulting and dismissive of their experience living with the degenerative brain disease. An open letter signed by the players’ wives, siblings and children says the study suggests their struggles caring for loved ones was due to “media hype” about chronic traumatic encephalopathy. They called that patronizing and offensive. CTE has been linked to concussions and other repeated head trauma. It can lead to memory loss, violent mood swings and depression. The study’s authors say there was no intent to minimize the disease or the caregivers’ struggles.

Red Sox baseball boss Breslow says Devers trade does not mean ‘waving of the white flag on 2025’

The Boston Red Sox thought they would be better off with a happy clubhouse than a disgruntled Rafael Devers. A day after trading their erstwhile third baseman to the San Francisco Giants, Red Sox President Sam Kennedy told reporters on Monday night that Devers’ refusal to change positions made it untenable for him to remain with the team. The Red Sox sent the three-time All-Star to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday night for pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison and a pair of prospects. The move comes less than two years after signing Devers to a 10-year, $313.5 million contract.

Red Sox trade Rafael Devers to the Giants in a blockbuster deal

The Boston Red Sox have traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a blockbuster deal. The Giants sent right-hander Jordan Hicks, lefty Kyle Harrison, outfield prospect James Tibbs III and minor league righty Jose Bello to the Red Sox for the 28-year-old designated hitter, who had bristled at his demotion from third base this year. Devers is one of baseball’s most feared sluggers. He is batting .272 with 15 homers and 58 RBIs in 73 games after he connected for a solo drive in Boston’s 2-0 victory over the New York Yankees.

Roman Anthony’s first MLB hit and sliding catch lead Red Sox to victory over Rays

Roman Anthony hit a two-run double for his first major league hit and added a sliding catch in right field to help the Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1. The win came one night after baseball’s top prospect went hitless and committed an error in an 11-inning loss. On Tuesday night, he went 1 for 4 with his family in the stands and gave Boston a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a sharp double to left. Trevor Story added two hits for the Red Sox, including a solo homer.

Bruins name ex-forward Marco Sturm as head coach after missing playoffs for first time since 2016

The Boston Bruins have hired Marco Sturm as coach to help the Original Six franchise get back to the playoffs after missing them for the first time since 2016. The Bruins picked Sturm to replace interim coach Joe Sacco, who took over from the fired Jim Montgomery in November and led the team to a 25-30-7 record — much of it after a trade deadline roster purge. Sturm becomes the 30th head coach in Bruins history after spending the past three seasons as head coach of the AHL’s Ontario Reign.

It hasn’t taken Mike Trout long to regain his form after missing a month with a bruised left knee. Trout had three more hits on Monday night, including a 454-foot homer that was the longest at Fenway Park this year. The Los Angeles Angels beat the Boston Red Sox 7-6. It was Trout’s second three-hit game in three starts since returning from the injured list on Friday. In all, the 11-time All-Star and three-time AL MVP is 8 for 14 since coming off the IL. It was only his second home run in 35 career games at Fenway Park.

Patriots say they will handle video of receiver Stefon Diggs internally

New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel says he is aware of a video that showed receiver Stefon Diggs passing a bag of pink crystals to women on a boat. Vrabel declined to comment on whether he has spoken to Diggs about it. Vrabel spoke at an optional practice on Wednesday that Diggs did not attend. The football player is shown in a video on social media talking to three women on a boat before he produces a bag of pink crystals. Vrabel said he wants all of his players to make good decisions.

Trump’s Harvard visa threat could wipe out several of the school’s sports teams

Some of Harvard’s sports teams would be virtually wiped out by a Trump administration decision that would make the Ivy League school ineligible for international student visas. Large portions of the men’s rowing and squash and women’s soccer and golf rosters list international hometowns on the school’s website. Sportico reported last month that 21% of the players on Harvard athletic rosters for the 2024-25 seasons had international hometowns. The Department of Homeland Security on Thursday revoked Harvard’s ability to enroll international students, saying the school has not adequately protected Jewish students from antisemitism on campus.

Bruins give GM Don Sweeney a 2-year extension to lead rebuild after first playoff miss since 2016

The Boston Bruins have signed general manager Don Sweeney to a two-year contract extension, trusting him to rebuild the roster after the team missed the playoffs this season for the first time since 2016. The move comes a month after team president Cam Neely said he needed to think about whether to keep Sweeney around after a decade in which the Bruins have seen unprecedented regular-season success followed largely by playoff flops. Sweeney fired coach Jim Montgomery in November and then sold off the roster at the trade deadline when it failed to respond under interim Joe Sacco.
