Big plans, hopes cut short for 4 slain Idaho students in 2022

The four University of Idaho students found stabbed to death at a rental home near campus on Nov. 13, 2022, were all friends and members of the university’s Greek system. The killings of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin left many of their classmates and residents reeling with grief and fear. Autopsies showed the four were all likely asleep when they were attacked. Some had defensive wounds and each was stabbed multiple times. A lawyer for one victim’s family has said that 30-year-old Bryan Kohberger has agreed to plead guilty to killing the four students as part of a deal to avoid the death penalty.

HHS layoffs were likely unlawful and must be halted, US judge says

A federal judge says that recent layoffs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services were likely unlawful and must be halted. U.S. District Judge Melissa DuBose in Rhode Island granted the preliminary injunction sought by a coalition after sweeping cuts to agencies including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and other divisions of the federal health department. The judge said the states were likely to prevail in their lawsuit claiming the layoffs and restructuring were arbitrary and capricious, violating federal law. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. eliminated more than 10,000 employees in late March and consolidated 28 agencies to just 15.

It was never in dispute that Miles Pfeffer of Bucks County killed Officer Christopher Fitzgerald. Thus, the verdict issued Wednesday followed a murder trial largely centered on whether the February 2023 shooting death had been intentional. Lawyers for Pfeffer said he was a frightened 18-year-old who panicked that night. Prosecutors said he shot the officer six times and that a security video of the shooting proved his intent. The now 20-year-old Pfeffer was sentenced to life without parole.

Trump voters cheer his move against Iran. MAGA leaders had warned the bombing could backfire

Interviews with supporters of President Donald Trump and a review of early polling suggest that his decision to order military strikes against Iran has been welcomed by his political base. While some say they’re weary of the U.S. becoming embroiled in a protracted war, most are cheering the order to bomb Iran’s nuclear sites. And members of his political base say they don’t see Trump’s move as running counter to his “America First” approach. As Trump considered action against Iran, many prominent leaders of his “Make America Great Again” movement warned that he was making a big mistake.

The New York case poses a similar issue because the state exempts religious employers if their purpose is to spread religious values and they primarily employ and serve people of their faith. But religious groups that serve and employ people regardless of their beliefs don’t qualify for the exemption.

The U.S. hopes a blowout win over the world’s 100th-ranked team can start to lessen the pessimism created by the Americans’ longest losing streak since 2007. Malik Tillman scored twice and Diego Luna had a pair of assists in a 5-0 rout of Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday in the Americans’ CONCACAF Gold Cup opener. Victory in the Group D opener came after days of controversy over Christian Pulisic’s desire to rest during the Gold Cup and Pochettino not including the star in a pair of pre-tournament friendlies the attacker offered to play in.

Judge blocks plan to allow immigration agents in New York City jail

A judge has blocked New York City’s mayor from letting federal immigration authorities reopen an office at the city’s main jail. New York Judge Mary Rosado’s decision Friday is a setback for Democratic Mayor Eric Adams, who issued an executive order permitting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal agencies to maintain office space at the Rikers Island jail complex. City lawmakers filed a lawsuit in April accusing Adams of entering into a “corrupt quid pro quo bargain” with the Trump administration in exchange for the U.S. Justice Department dropping criminal charges against him. Adams has repeatedly denied making a deal with the administration over the criminal case.
