58M pounds of corn dogs and sausage-on-a-stick products recalled because wood pieces may be inside

About 58 million pounds of corn dogs and other sausage-on-a-stick products are being recalled across the U.S. because wood pieces may be embedded in the batter. The Agriculture Department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall on Saturday. It covers certain “State Fair Corn Dogs on a Stick” and “Jimmy Dean Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick” products from Hillshire Brands, a Tyson Foods subsidiary. The issue was discovered after consumer complaints, with five injuries reported. The products were made between March 17 and last Friday. Consumers should either discard or return the products — and check online for further information.

4 dead after flooding in Arizona, including in historic mining town

Four people have died after heavy rain caused flooding in Arizona, including three in a rural 19th-century mining town where floodwaters forced people to seek safety on their rooftops and washed out a propane distributorship, scattering about 1,000 tanks downtown. About 2.5 inches of rain fell in the mining town of Globe on Friday. Another storm moved in Saturday afternoon, temporarily halting the search for people possibly missing in the flood. Another person was found dead Saturday morning near a vehicle caught in floodwaters in suburban Phoenix the night before.

Justin Lamson threw a pair of long touchdown passes 90 seconds apart in a dominating first quarter and Montana State went on to an easy 57-3 win over Eastern Washington to open Big Sky Conference play. A man admitted to killing and burying his parents eight years ago in the backyard of their upstate New York home during a television interview this week, then was arrested as he left the studio. The stunning confession from Lorenz Kraus came Thursday, a day after police say they recovered two bodies from a home in Albany as part of an investigation that found Kraus’ parents were still receiving Social Security payments despite not having been seen or heard from in years. Franz pleaded not guilty Friday to charges of murder and concealing a corpse. During the interview, Kraus described their deaths as mercy killings for two aging and ailing parents.

Grand Canyon National Park will soon reopen portions of the North Rim to public access in the aftermath of a wildfire that destroyed a historic lodge and dozens of structures. The National Park Service announced Thursday that daytime access will begin Oct. 1 to locations including Point Imperial. That is the park’s highest overlook at the eastern end of the Grand Canyon. The Dragon Bravo Fire was sparked by lightning in early July and burned for about a week before exploding into a fast-moving conflagration that forced evacuations and consumed the Grand Canyon Lodge. The National Park Service has defended its handling of the fire.

An Arizona man has been convicted on eight murder charges for a string of fatal shootings in Phoenix after a trial that spanned several months. Jury deadlocks again in trial of officer charged with sexually abusing inmates at California prison

A federal jury has deadlocked for the second time in a trial of a former correctional officer charged with sexually abusing four inmates at a now-closed federal women’s prison in California. Prosecutors said Darrell Wayne Smith, who worked at the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, assaulted the women in their cells and in the prison’s laundry room between 2019 and 2021. He faced 14 counts related to sexual abuse. Jurors, who had been deliberating since Sept. 18, could not reach a unanimous verdict and deadlocked on Wednesday. In March, Smith faced similar charges in a trial that also ended with a deadlock.

Officials say no injuries were reported after a commercial regional jet overshot the designated touch down zone at a Virginia airport amid heavy rain, but was stopped in a safety area at the end of the runway. The Federal Aviation Administration says CommuteAir Flight 4339 “landed long” as it arrived at Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport around 10 p.m. Wednesday. It was safely stopped by an engineered materials arresting system bed at the end of the runway. An official from CommuteAir says 50 passengers and three crew members were on board the flight from Washington Dulles International Airport. The FAA will investigate.

Police gather for funeral of 3 Pennsylvania detectives ambushed by gunman

Hundreds of police officers are expected to attend a closed funeral for three Pennsylvania detectives shot and killed last week by a man who had been inside the home of a woman he was accused of stalking. The service Thursday at a church in Red Lion will follow a procession to bring the bodies of the three Northern York County Regional Police detectives from a funeral home. The detectives last week had gone to the home of the reported stalking victim. They were immediately fired upon when they opened the woman’s front door. Two other officers were also hurt. The stalking suspect died in the exchange of gunfire with police.

‘Very mean squirrel’ seeking food has sent at least 2 people to the ER in a California city

Residents of a San Francisco Bay Area city are on the lookout for an aggressive squirrel that has sent at least two people to the emergency room. Joan Heblack told ABC affiliate KGO-TV that she was walking in a San Rafael neighborhood when a squirrel attacked her leg. Isabel Campoy says she too had been walking in the Lucas Valley neighborhood of San Rafael when the squirrel attacked, leaving her arm bloody. Flyers are now posted warning residents of the “very mean squirrel.” Experts say the squirrel was likely accustomed to people feeding and caring for it. Squirrels are not vectors for rabies.

Maine wardens rescue moose trapped for hours in abandoned well

A bull moose that fell into an abandoned well in Maine was pulled to safety during an elaborate five hour rescue. The operation happened Wednesday after the family that owned forested land in northern Maine discovered the moose looking out from well that was about 9-feet deep. They alerted the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife. A biologist sedated the moose and then wardens put straps on the moose. Using an excavator provided by family, they gingerly lifted the moose out of the well. It eventually woke up and ran off — seemingly unhurt by the ordeal.

The family of a 12-year-old girl critically wounded during the deadly shooting at a Minneapolis Catholic church says she is making remarkable progress. Doctors expect Sophia Forchas to move this week from acute care to an inpatient rehabilitation program. She was the most seriously wounded child among those who survived the shooting. Just weeks ago doctors were unsure whether she would survive. Her family says Sophia’s medical team remains cautiously optimistic, but there are signs of neurological recovery. MLB owners approve sale of Tampa Bay Rays to group headed by Patrick Zalupski

Major League Baseball owners have unanimously approved the sale of the Tampa Bay Rays to a group led by real estate developer Patrick Zalupski. The transfer from Stu Sternberg’s group is expected to close soon. Sternberg took control of the team in 2005 and rebranded it as the Rays after the 2007 season. The team won four AL East titles under Sternberg and reached the World Series twice. Because of damage from Hurricane Milton, the Rays played home games at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa this season. Commissioner Rob Manfred expects Zalupski to start a new search for a ballpark site.

Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl has announced his retirement months after taking the Tigers to another NCAA Final Four. Pearl’s 38-year-old son Steven Pearl is taking over as head coach of the Tigers. In a 14-minute video posted on social media Monday, the 65-year-old Pearl says he feels it’s time to pass the torch. Army identifies 4 soldiers killed in military helicopter crash in Washington state

The Army has released the names of four soldiers killed when the military helicopter they were on crashed near a base in Washington state. The Army in a release Monday identified the victims as chief warrant officers Andrew Cully and Andrew Kraus, and sergeants Donavon Scott and Jadalyn Good. Cully was from Sparta, Missouri. Kraus was from Sanibel, Florida. Scott was from Tacoma, Washington, and Good was from Mount Vernon, Washington. Army officials have said the helicopter was on a routine flight training west of Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The base is about 10 miles south of Tacoma. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Chargers’ Najee Harris injures Achilles tendon during non-contact play against Broncos

Los Angeles Chargers running back Najee Harris hurt his left Achilles tendon during a non-contact play in the win against the Denver Broncos. The injury happened in the second quarter on Sunday. Harris went down with just over five minutes remaining and had to be helped off the field. He did not return to the game. Before the injury, he had six carries for 28 yards. Harris missed training camp due to an eye injury from a fireworks mishap in July. He played in the Chargers’ first two wins of the season. Chargers guard Mekhi Becton also sustained a concussion in the second quarter and did not return.

Minnesota Vikings cornerback Isaiah Rodgers became the first player in team history with two defensive touchdowns in the same game. He scored on an 87-yard interception return and a 66-yard fumble return in the first half against Cincinnati. Rodgers forced three of the four turnovers by the Bengals all by himself. Eli Gillman ran for 120 and three touchdowns, Keali’i Ah Yat passed for a career-high 313 yards and two scores and Montana rolled to a 63-20 win over Indiana State. Montana State shut out Mercyhurst 17-0 on Saturday. Julius Davis and Adam Jones both ran for touchdowns. Davis scored in the first quarter, capping a 92-yard drive. Myles Sansted added a field goal in the second quarter. Jones scored just before halftime, finishing an 83-yard drive. The Bobcats’ defense dominated with 10 tackles for loss and limited Mercyhurst to 58 rushing yards. Ryan Krahe intercepted a pass in the end zone late in the game. Caitlin Clark said referees couldn’t stop her Indiana Fever. The WNBA made her pay for it. Release party for Swift’s ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ album is coming to AMC theaters

Taylor Swift is heading back to the big screen next month, and fans are already lining up for tickets. AMC Theatres will host a release party for Swift’s 12th studio album, “The Life of the Showgirl,” in October. Officials say the nearly 90-minute show will play at all 540 AMC theaters in the U.S. between Oct. 3 and Oct. 5. Max Scherzer has struggled to escape the first inning unscathed. On Friday night, he didn’t get out of the first at all. The veteran Blue Jays right-hander was pulled after two-thirds of an inning, the shortest start without an injury of his 18-year career. Scherzer allowed seven runs on seven hits while getting two outs, and Toronto went on to lose 20-1 to the Kansas City Royals. Blue Jays manager John Schneider called it “a weird outing” from a player who’s likely bound for the Hall of Fame. Scherzer said he wasn’t overly concerned. He has a career-worst 5.06 ERA this season.

DNA testing underway on remains believed to be Travis Decker, wanted in killings of his girls

Authorities say they have found skeletal remains they believe are Travis Decker, an ex-soldier wanted in the deaths of his three daughters. The discovery in the mountains of Washington state comes after an and off search that lasted months. The 32-year-old Decker has been wanted since June 2, when a sheriff’s deputy found his truck and the girls’ bodies at a campground outside Leavenworth. They have been identified as 9-year-old Paityn Decker, 8-year-old Evelyn Decker and 5-year-old Olivia Decker. Three days earlier Travis Decker failed to return the girls to their mother’s home in Wenatchee, about 100 miles east of Seattle.

Gary Busey gets probation for sexual offense at 2022 horror convention

Actor Gary Busey has been sentenced to two years probation for a sexual offense stemming from an appearance at a 2022 horror convention in New Jersey, according to court records. The sentence was handed down Thursday during a virtual hearing in state court in Camden. Busey didn’t speak during the hearing. The 81-year-old “Buddy Holly” star had pleaded guilty in July to a single count of criminal sexual contact for touching a woman’s buttocks “over clothing during an 8-10 second photo op.” The actor had been accused of inappropriately touching at least three women at the Monster-Mania Convention at the Doubletree Hotel in Cherry Hill, a South Jersey town and suburb of Philadelphia.

Autopsy finds hanged Mississippi student died by suicide, police say

Mississippi police say an autopsy by the state medical examiner’s office has concluded a Black student found hanging from a tree at Delta State University died by suicide. Police in Cleveland, where the campus is located, announced the findings in a news release Thursday. The 21-year-old student’s death was discovered Monday and immediately ignited strong emotions in a Southern state with a history of racist violence. The student’s family and their lawyers had already called for an independent autopsy and urged police to release any video evidence they have in the case. The Cleveland police statement says the death investigation remains active and that all files are being shared with the FBI.

ABC has taken Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show off the air indefinitely. The decision came hours after FCC chairman Brendan Carr criticized Kimmel’s comments about Charlie Kirk’s assassination as “truly sick.” President Donald Trump appointed Carr to head the Federal Communications Commission in November. Former South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw collapsed while coaching his 9-year-old son’s football team, according to media reports. The 33-year-old Shaw was taken to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital and was in ICU as of Thursday morning, according to The State newspaper. Shaw was South Carolina’s starting quarterback from 2011 to 2013 and was inducted into the school’s athletics Hall of Fame in 2021. Social media accounts reported that Shaw fell or passed out on Wednesday night during a game in Simpsonville, South Carolina, and was wheeled off the field in an ambulance.

Man dies after riding roller coaster at new Florida theme park Epic Universe

Authorities say a man in his 30s has died after riding a roller coaster at Epic Universe. It’s one of the nation’s newest amusement parks. Florida authorities say he was found unresponsive on Wednesday and later pronounced dead at a hospital. No further details have been released. Universal Orlando Resorts opened Epic Universe in May. The park features five themed sections and a 500-room hotel. It’s the first major theme park to open in Florida since 1999, when Universal Islands of Adventure debuted. The addition of Epic Universe brings the total number of parks at the Florida resort to four.

The U.S. Army says a helicopter has crashed near Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. The crash happened Wednesday night. Officials have not provided details about the helicopter, the number of people aboard or their conditions. The Thurston County sheriff’s office reports that deputies were dispatched to the Summit Lake area after losing contact with a helicopter. The sheriff’s office says it was working with the base. No further information is available. Joint Base Lewis-McChord is located about 10 miles south of Tacoma.

Hurricane Helene displaced thousands of students. Some struggled to get back on track with school

Thousands of students across western North Carolina lost their homes a year ago when Helene hit with some of the most vicious floods, landslides and wind ever seen in the mountainous region. Helene damaged more than 73,000 homes. The homeless student population surged, doubling in some places and even increasing fourfold in one county. Across the state, more than 2,500 students were identified as homeless as a direct result of Helene, according to state data obtained by The Associated Press. Brothers plead guilty in North Carolina deputy’s shooting death

Two brothers have pleaded guilty to charges related to the killing of a North Carolina sheriff’s deputy in 2022. Alder Marin-Sotelo pleaded guilty on Tuesday to first-degree murder, while his brother Arturo Marin-Sotelo pleaded guilty to being an accessory. A judge sentenced Alder to life without parole and Arturo to eight to 10 years. The shooting happened when Wake County Deputy Ned Byrd approached a truck at night. Legal proceedings were delayed after Alder Marin-Sotelo escaped from a Virginia jail but was later captured in Mexico. The Wake district attorney says prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty for his return.

Suspect arrested in Atlanta auto break-in and theft of Beyoncé’s unreleased music, police say

Police have arrested a suspect in a July auto break-in that two people touring with Beyoncé′ said resulted in the theft of the singer’s unreleased music. Atlanta police said Tuesday that the suspect is in custody. Jail records do not list an attorney for the suspect, Kelvin Evans, who is charged with entering an automobile with the intent to commit theft. A dancer and choreographer traveling with Beyoncé′ for her Atlanta concerts told police on July 8 that someone broke into their rental vehicle and stole two suitcases. Police said stolen items included a thumb drive containing Beyoncé′s “unreleased music” but nothing was recovered.

Flyers GM Danny Briere says Carter Hart won’t return to team after acquittal on assault charges

Philadelphia Flyers general manager Danny Briere says Carter Hart’s agent has informed the team that the goalie has ruled out a return to the Flyers. Hart is one of five players acquitted of sexual assault charges stemming from a 2018 incident involving Canada’s world junior team. The NHL has said these players can sign contracts starting Oct. 15 and participate in games from Dec. 1. Briere says Hart is looking for a fresh start after the events of the past year and a half. None of the players currently have contracts and all are free agents.

Trump files $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times

President Donald Trump has filed a $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times and four of its journalists. Court documents show the lawsuit was filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Florida. It names several articles and one book written by two of the publication’s journalists and published in the lead up to the 2024 election, saying they are “part of a decades-long pattern by the New York Times of intentional and malicious defamation against President Trump.” The New York Times did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment early Tuesday. In a Truth Social post announcing the lawsuit, Trump accused The New York Times of lying about him and defaming him.

Youth mental health challenges keep mounting 2 years after Maui wildfires

Youth in Lahaina, Hawaii, have been struggling since wildfires destroyed their hometown two years ago. The Hawaii Department of Education estimates over a third of Maui students lost family members or faced other hardships after the fires. Two years later, therapists say students’ mental health issues continue to grow. Students say they struggle mentally whenever it’s windy or they hear of minor brush fires nearby. Maui faces a shortage of mental health professionals, making it difficult for students to get timely help. Outdoor adventure and peer counselor programs have stepped up to offer kids support.

Ohtani’s lawyers claim he was victim of likeness misuse in real estate deal, move to dismiss lawsuit

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani and his agent have moved to dismiss a lawsuit accusing them of causing a real estate investor and broker to be fired from a $240 million luxury housing development in Hawaii. The lawsuit was filed in August by developer Kevin J. Hayes Sr. and real estate broker Tomoko Matsumoto. They accused Ohtani and agent Nez Balelo of “abuse of power” and unjust enrichment. Lawyers for Ohtani and Balelo argued that Hayes and Matsumoto misused Ohtani’s name and image without authorization. Kingsbarn Realty Capital, the project’s majority owner, have called the allegations “completely frivolous.”

Charley Hull took advantage of top-ranked Jeeno Thitikul’s final-hole putting meltdown Sunday to win the Kroger Queen City Championship. Thitikul — a stroke ahead after Hull bogeyed the par-4 17th — four-putted the par-5 18th from about 50 feet, missing a 5-footer and a 3-foot comebacker. Hull two-putted from about 30 feet, making a 2-footer for the victory. Hull closed with a 4-under 68 to finish at 20-under 268 at TPC River’s Bend. The 29-year-old English player won her third LPGA Tour title and first since 2022. Thitikul matched Hull with a 68. The Thai star missed a chance to become the first multiple winner on the tour this season.

The mother of a 10-year-old girl killed during a mass shooting in a Catholic church in Minneapolis has remembered her as a sharp, curious and funny child who “didn’t water herself down.” Friends, family and people gathered Sunday in an outdoor amphitheater by a lake to celebrate Harper Moyski’s life. Oklahoma strikes sour note with band forced to miss game in Philadelphia because of budget woes

The Pride of Oklahoma marching band has been benched because of budget constraints. The band announced on social media that it couldn’t travel to Philadelphia for Saturday’s game between No. 13 Oklahoma and Temple. Instead, the Saint Joseph’s pep band filled in, leading “Boomer Sooner” at Lincoln Financial Field. The Pride of Oklahoma stated it would still travel to all Big 12 road games this season. The full band will go to Texas, while the pep band will visit South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama. The Pride of Oklahoma has played at OU games for more than a century.
