Trump expands tariff relief on coffee, fruit and beef from Brazil

President Donald Trump has continued loosening tariffs on Brazil to lower consumer costs for Americans. The decision, released Thursday, affects coffee, fruit and beef. The White House said last week that Trump was rolling back some worldwide tariffs originally announced in April. However, Brazil said that didn’t affect levies Trump enacted in July to punish the country for prosecuting his political ally, former President Jair Bolsonaro. Thursday’s decision harmonizes Trump’s plans, ensuring that neither the April nor July tariffs apply to certain products. A pending deal to end the government shutdown is too late for about 30 bison on the Fort Peck reservation in northern Montana. The animals are being killed to make up for a lapse in food benefits. Tribal officials say about one-third of Fort Peck’s members depend on monthly benefit checks. That’s about triple the rate for the U.S. as a whole. They’ve received only partial payments in November after President Donald Trump’s administration choked off food aid funding during the shutdown. Rural reservations across the Great Plains have been culling their cherished bison herds to fill the gap. The 30 bison from Fort Peck equals about 12,000 pounds of meat.

The latest US strikes on alleged drug boats kill 6 in the eastern Pacific

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has announced the latest in a series of strikes on boats accused of ferrying drugs, killing six people in attacks on two vessels in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The dual strikes on Sunday bring the total number of known attacks up to 19 and the death toll to at least 75 people since the Trump administration launched a campaign against drug trafficking in South American waters that many see as a pressure tactic on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. The Trump administration has provided no evidence for its assertions, and lawmakers have pressed for more information on who’s being targeted and the legal justification for the strikes.

MLB pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz charged with taking bribes to rig pitches for bettors

Two Major League Baseball pitchers have been indicted on charges they took bribes to give sports bettors advance notice of the types of pitches they’d throw and intentionally tossed balls instead of strikes to ensure successful bets. Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz both pitched for the Cleveland Guardians. They have been on non-disciplinary paid leave since July while Major League Baseball investigated what it said was unusually high in-game betting activity when they pitched. A lawyer for Ortiz declined to comment when contacted by The Associated Press and a lawyer for Clase did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

Thanksgiving air traffic could ‘slow to a trickle’ if shutdown persists, transport secretary says

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warns that U.S. air traffic could slow significantly if the federal government shutdown continues into the Thanksgiving travel season. The Federal Aviation Administration has already ordered flight cuts at major airports. Some air traffic controllers, who have gone unpaid for nearly a month, have stopped working. Reductions began Friday at 4% and could reach 10% by November 14. On Sunday, 1,375 flights were canceled. Duffy suggests further cuts might be needed, possibly up to 20%. He emphasizes the need for action to keep people safe amid an overtaxed system.
