Kershaw exits after 4 shaky innings in rusty season debut for Dodgers

Clayton Kershaw looked rusty during his first major league outing in nearly nine months. The three-time Cy Young Award winner lasted four innings Saturday night for the Los Angeles Dodgers, allowing five runs and five hits against the Angels. He walked three, struck out two and threw 48 of 83 pitches for strikes. The club’s career strikeout leader needs 30 to reach 3,000 in his illustrious career. Kershaw was making his 2025 debut after recovering from offseason toe and knee surgeries. The 37-year-old left-hander gave up three runs in a 38-pitch first inning when Logan O’Hoppe delivered a two-run single and Matthew Lugo had an RBI single.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams says 19 people were injured, four seriously. But he says the 142-year-old bridge has been spared major damage. The cause of the collision is under investigation. The Mexican navy says in a post on the social media platform X that Saturday’s incident involves the Cuauhtemoc, an academy training vessel.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved Novavax’s COVID-19 vaccine but with unusual restrictions. Novavax makes the nation’s only traditional protein-based coronavirus vaccine and while it has long been authorized for use, it had expected full approval last month. Late Friday, the FDA licensed the vaccine but for use only in adults 65 and older — or those 12 to 64 who have at least one health problem that puts them at increased risk from the virus. Novavax also is required to do additional clinical trials of the shot.

Scottie Scheffler storms into a 3-shot lead in the PGA Championship with another major in sight

Scottie Scheffler has gone from a three-shot deficit to a three-shot lead in the PGA Championship. Scheffler pulled away Saturday by playing the last five holes at Quail Hollow in 5-under par. That gives him a 65 and the lead over Alex Noren. It was a wild day at Quail Hollow in which nine players had at least a share of the lead at one point. That included Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm. DeChambeau played the last three holes in 3 over and shot 69. He was six behind. Rahm shot a 67 and was five shots back.

DeChambeau collapses on Green Mile, falling from 1st to tie for 8th at PGA Championship

For a brief minute, it seemed Bryson DeChambeau was beginning to lock in on a third major championship. The notorious long-ball hitter had just made birdie on the 15th hole Saturday to get to 8-under par giving him sole possession of the lead at the PGA Championship. And then Quail Hollow’s famous three closing holes known as the Green Mile — and a few unfortunate gusts of win — changed everything. The two-time U.S. Open champion made bogey on No. 16 and double bogey on 17. In a span of about 90 minutes, DeChambeau went from first place to tied for eighth and six shots behind leader and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler entering the final round.

The PGA of America says Rory McIlroy was part of some 50 players who had drivers tested before the PGA Championship. Kerry Haigh is the chief championships officer of the PGA of America. He says randomly testing one-third of the 156-man field is normal procedure and this week at Quail Hollow was no exception. McIlroy had to replace his driver because it was no longer conforming. Haigh says that happens to several players from hitting so many shots with the driver. He says results are confidential because players are unaware when a driver doesn’t conform. Intent is never in question.

At least a dozen law enforcement agencies are searching for seven of the 10 men who broke out of a New Orleans jail by fleeing through a hole behind a toilet and scaling a wall. Friday’s escape is already drawing intense scrutiny and opprobrium. It took hours for sheriff’s officials to learn of the escape and then more time still to alert New Orleans police. Some of the missing men are accused of violent offenses and they escaped into a neighborhood less than 2 miles from the city’s famous French Quarter. Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson has said the men were able to get out of the Orleans Justice Center because of defective locks, and possibly with help from people inside her department.

Goaltender Frederik Andersen has been strong through two rounds of the playoffs for the Carolina Hurricanes. Andersen is 7-2 with a 1.36 goals-against average and .937 save percentage. Those numbers are best among goalies with multiple postseason starts. That’s a key reason why the Hurricanes are back in the Eastern Conference final for the second time in three seasons. The 35-year-old Andersen has had health and injury issues in recent years. That includes missing a lot of the regular season last year with a blood-clot issue. Andersen says he’s enjoying the postseason after those challenges.

Still finding trouble in the woods: ‘Blair Witch Project’ star at center of Maine road dispute

Heather Donahue starred in the low-budget hit movie “The Blair Witch Project” and has been embroiled in a spat with locals in her tiny Maine town after she started marking trees to help people find their way in the dense forests. It’s a twist of fate harkening back to her long ago movie career. Donahue had been a member of the town’s governing board but lost a recall election recently after a controversy about whether a rural road was public or private. She says she is putting the saga behind her and getting back to enjoying a quiet life in Maine.

New standards for Oklahoma high school students promote misinformation about the 2020 election

Beginning next school year, the curriculum standards for Oklahoma high school students will including conspiracy theories about the 2020 presidential election. The standards were revised at the direction of state School Superintendent Ryan Walters. The first-term conservative has leaned into fighting what he describes as “wokeness” in public schools. A lawsuit has been filed challenging the new standards, and even the GOP governor and state legislators have expressed concern over letting the standards take effect for the upcoming school year. One Democratic state lawmaker says Walters’ push is “harmful posturing and political theater.”

Celtics have an uncertain future with Jayson Tatum’s injury, huge payroll to confront

The Boston Celtics entered this season with hopes of ending the NBA’s six-season drought without a repeat champion. It all thudded to the surface in the postseason, cemented by Boston’s 4-2 conference semifinals loss to a New York Knicks team that it had previously dominated this season. Just as painful as getting dethroned at NBA champions was the devastating ruptured Achilles tendon injury to Jayson Tatum. It cast a pall not only over the remainder of the New York series but has thrust the Celtics’ future into uncertainty heading into the offseason.

Colombia seeks to join China-based development bank as Latin America drifts away from Washington

Colombia’s government has applied to join a China-based development bank. It’s another sign of Latin America’s drift away from the U.S. as the Trump administration’s foreign aid cuts, trade barriers and crackdown on immigration spurs many leaders in the region to seek closer ties with Washington’s geopolitical rival. The announcement was made by President Gustavo Petro as he wrapped up a visit to China this week with a stop in Shanghai to visit the New Development Bank. The multilateral lender was set up a decade ago. Petro told reporters in China on Saturday that Colombia is committed to purchasing $512 million worth of shares in the bank.

Student loans have been confusing lately. Here’s a guide to know where you stand

Between collections resuming, courts challenging student loan programs and layoffs in the Education Department, borrowers might be confused about the status their student loans. Recently, the Education Department announced that it would start involuntary collections through the Treasury Department’s offset program. Involuntary collection could affect the roughly 5.3 million borrowers who are in default. At the center of the turmoil are the government’s income-driven repayment plans, which reduce monthly payments for borrowers with lower incomes. Those plans were temporarily paused after a federal court blocked parts of the plans in February.

The old slang term ’86’ probably started as restaurant-worker jargon. Suddenly it’s in the news

The slang term at the center of a political firestorm around former FBI Director James Comey likely originated as food-service-industry jargon before extending to other uses. In a since-deleted Instagram post, Comey shared a photo of shells in the shapes of “86 47.” He said he took it as a political message, since President Donald Trump is the 47th president, and to “86” something can be to get rid of it, like a rowdy patron at a bar. But Trump and other Republicans took it more ominously, saying Comey was advocating violence, given that “86” has at times been used as a way to mean someone’s killing.

An exhausted Anthony Edwards made a point to promise a return to the Western Conference finals when the Minnesota Timberwolves were ousted from the NBA playoffs last year. He was particularly talking to Mike Conley. Nobody with the Wolves is more revered than the 37-year-old point guard. There isn’t anyone they want more to win for this time than him. He’s never reached the NBA Finals. The Wolves eliminated Golden State in the second round with a significant contribution from Conley. He played tight defense on Warriors sharpshooter Buddy Hield and had 16 points in the elimination game on Wednesday.

Oregon’s landmark bottle redemption law may change due to concerns over drugs and homelessness

In 1971, Oregon became the first state in the nation to pass a “bottle bill.” Consumers currently pay a 10-cent deposit on certain beverage cans and bottles, then get that deposit back when returning them at a store or redemption center. Now Oregon lawmakers may overhaul the law. They’re considering new time restrictions on redemption sites that some say have become magnets for drugs and homelessness. The legislation would also allow new types of alternative return sites in Portland in response to retailers’ concerns. Some residents say redemption centers negatively impact their neighborhoods. Others say bottle returns are key income sources for poor people.

Republicans forge their tax bill in Trump’s image, with ‘MAGA accounts’ and more

House Republicans are in the final rounds of negotiations over a sweeping budget plan that has been significantly influenced by President Donald Trump’s priorities. Many GOP lawmakers expect the bill will only make it through the finish line if Trump personally weighs with members. It is not unusual in the modern era for a president to direct the legislative priorities in Congress, but many House Republicans see Trump’s role as singular and decisive as they aim to pass the bill before Memorial Day.

Jhonattan Vegas remains in the lead at the PGA Championship on a day where the drama was everywhere else. Vegas made a double bogey on the last hole for a 70. He leads by two. It’s the name three shots behind that has everyone’s attention. Scottie Scheffler has been scrapping by and not making many mistakes. He shot a 68 and was tied with Max Homa. Rory McIlroy is still wild off the tee. He has a new driver because his regular was deemed nonconforming earlier in the week. Defending champion Xander Schauffele narrowly made the cut with gritty play.

Comey interviewed by the Secret Service over ’86 47′ social media post

Former FBI Director James Comey has been interviewed by the Secret Service about a social media post that Republicans suggested was a call for violence against President Donald Trump. That’s according to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who said federal agents questioned Comey on Friday. The interview is expected to help investigators assess the purpose and intent of the post and whether Comey intended to communicate a threat to the president, which he has denied. At issue is an Instagram post from Thursday in which Comey wrote “cool shell formation on my beach walk” under a picture of seashells that appeared to form the shapes for “86 47.”

Report: McIlroy’s driver deemed nonconforming ahead of PGA Championship

XM Sirius PGA Tour Radio is reporting Rory McIlroy’s driver was deemed to be nonconforming at the PGA Championship. The report says he learned this before the start of the major. McIlroy made the cut on the number Friday at Quail Hollow after a 69. He has declined to speak to the media for two days in a row. The USGA confirms only that it did driving testing at Quail Hollow this week for the PGA Championship. The USGA often tests clubs at U.S. majors and PGA Tour events it is asked. It says the results are confidential.

World Pride comes to Washington in the shadow of, and in defiance of, the Trump administration

The World Pride 2025 welcome concert, with pop icon Shakira performing at Nationals Stadium, isn’t until May 31. But for host city Washington, D.C., the festivities start with a string of localized pre-Pride events beginning with Trans Pride on Saturday. Hundreds of LGBTQ+ rallies, seminars, parties, after-parties and after-after-parties are planned for the next three weeks across the nation’s capital, including Black Pride and Latin Pride. It all culminates in a two-day closing festival on June 7 and 8. The biannual international event typically draws more than a million visitors. But this year’s events will carry a sense of community-wide anxiety due to the policies of President Donald Trump’s administration.

Favorite Margie’s Intention handles the slop at Pimlico, wins the Black-Eyed Susan

Margie’s Intention outran Paris Lily in the stretch to win the Black-Eyed Susan by three-quarters of a length. The 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-old fillies was delayed around an hour because of a significant storm that passed over Pimlico. Margie’s Intention was the 5-2 favorite at race time. She had little difficulty on the sloppy track with Flavien Prat aboard. Paris Lily started impressively and was in front in the second turn, but she was eventually overtaken by Margie’s Intention on the outside. Kinzie Queen was third. Morning line favorite Runnin N Gunnin finished last in the nine-horse field.

Schauffele battles back to make the cut at the PGA Championship, extends streak to 64 tournaments

Xander Schauffele kept his cut streak alive — barely. The defending champion shot an even-par 71 on Friday at the PGA Championship to make the cut on the number at 1-over 143, extending his streak to 64 tournaments. He hasn’t missed a cut since the 2022 Masters. Masters champion Rory McIlroy also had some drama, making the cut on the number after bogeying 17 and 18. McIlroy, the third-ranked Schauffele and No. 4 Collin Morikawa were all nine shots behind second-round leader Jhonattan Vegas. Six of the top 10 players in the world missed the cut — two-time PGA winner Justin Thomas (No. 5), Ludvig Aberg (No. 6), Hideki Matsuyama (No. 7), Russell Henley (No. 8), Sepp Straka (No. 9) and Shane Lowry (No. 10).

Donald Trump’s Library of Congress fight is really about the separation of powers

President Donald Trump’s abrupt firing of top officials at the Library of Congress and equally sudden attempt to appoint a slate of loyalists as replacements has morphed into an enormous fight over the separation of powers. And it’s a power struggle with potentially vast consequences. The battle over control of the Library of Congress has prompted Republican leaders on Capitol Hill to deliver rare pushback against Trump.  Senate Majority Leader John Thune and other Republicans have been talking with the White House about a potential path to détente. New York Democratic Rep. Joe Morelle says “this egregious overreach into the legislature by the executive branch is just unwarranted and, we believe, unprecedented.”

A Texas suburb that saw its population jump by a third is the fastest-growing city in the US

The fastest-growing city in the U.S. last year was a Dallas suburb that saw its population jump by nearly a third. The U.S. Census Bureau said Thursday that the number of residents in Princeton, Texas, increased from about 28,000 to 37,000 from 2023 to 2024. The growth has come so fast that the city has struggled to build roads and infrastructure fast enough. The city’s mayor says affordability has been the main draw to the area, which still has a small-town feel even as housing developments have blanketed the area. The U.S. Census Bureau’s Vintage 2024 estimates show that cities of all sizes grew on average in that time period.
