MLB-best Brewers rally again, set franchise single-season record for consecutive victories with 14

The Milwaukee Brewers set a single-season franchise record with their 14th straight victory Saturday. And, in keeping with recent form, it wasn’t easy. The MLB-leading Brewers rallied for the second straight game and beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 in 11 innings. This Milwaukee club set a new benchmark — so far — for consecutive victories, surpassing the 1987 team that opened that season by winning its first 13 games. The Brewers will look to add to their streak in the series finale on Sunday. Milwaukee’s overall record for consecutive wins is 16 games, from 1986-87, when they won their last three games in 1986 and their first 13 in 1987.

Commanders activate Terry McLaurin off the PUP list as contract extension talks linger

The Washington Commanders have activated Terry McLaurin off the physically unable to perform list. Lingering contract extension talks have kept the 2024 second-team All-Pro off the practice field for the entirety of training camp. McLaurin is entering the final year of a three-year, $68.2 million contract signed in 2022. Coach Dan Quinn said the PUP activation was about beginning the “return-to-play” process where McLaurin acclimates physically with enough time for a hopeful return to action for the regular season. Quinn said he doubted McLaurin would play in either of Washington’s remaining preseason games.

Former Nashville officer gets probation after alleged participation in adult video while on duty

A former Nashville police officer has been sentenced to probation on a charge of felony official misconduct after law enforcement officials say he allegedly participated in an adult video while on duty. According to court documents filed Thursday, Sean Herman entered a “best interest” plea in Nashville criminal court for one count. A second count was dismissed. The best interest plea means that a defendant pleads guilty while maintaining factual innocence of the crime. Additionally, he was granted judicial diversion, which means that certain eligible defendants who successfully finish probation under the judge’s conditions will have their case dismissed. They can also then request that charges be expunged from their record.

Library book returned after 82 years. Note says, ‘Grandma won’t be able to pay for it anymore’

A library book has been returned nearly 82 years after it was borrowed from the San Antonio Public Library. It came with a letter noting that “Grandma won’t be able to pay for it anymore.” The book is “Your Child, His Family, and Friends” by the psychologist Frances Bruce Strain. The person who returned it says the book was checked out in 1943 by their grandmother when their father was 11 years old. Overdue fines back then were three cents a day. Accounting for inflation, that would be more than $16,000 in today’s money. Luckily, the library eliminated overdue fines in 2021.

The clearing of homeless encampments in the nation’s capital is unfolding under what President Donald Trump calls his Making D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force. For many of those targeted, there’s an ugliness to what is going on, and nothing beautiful about it. People being forced from their makeshift living quarters in Washington spoke to The Associated Press about feeling persecuted by the move to expel them. Trump opened his presidency with a round of housecleaning in official Washington. Now he’s taking on another side of the city. He’s sent some 800 National Guard troops to help local police go after crime, homeless camps and grime.

Judge strikes down key parts of Florida law that led to removal of books from school libraries

A federal judge has struck down key parts of a Florida law that allowed parents to remove books they found objectionable from public school libraries. U.S. District Judge Carlos Mendoza ruled Wednesday that the statute’s prohibition on material describing sexual conduct was overbroad. The law led to the removal of classics like “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Slaughterhouse-Five” from central Florida schools. Mendoza emphasized that librarians should curate collections based on discretion, not decrees. The lawsuit was brought by publishers, authors, and parents. Schools should now follow a U.S. Supreme Court precedent to evaluate books, the judge ruled.

Nevada court apparently clears way for former Raiders coach Jon Gruden to sue NFL over emails

A Nevada court has apparently cleared the way for a 2021 lawsuit filed by former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden to proceed against Commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL. Gruden’s lawsuit alleges that a “malicious and orchestrated campaign” was used to destroy his career by leaking old emails he had sent that included racist, misogynistic and homophobic comments. In 2022, the NFL appealed to Nevada’s high court after a Las Vegas judge rejected league bids to dismiss Gruden’s claim outright or to order out-of-court talks that could be overseen by Goodell. The Nevada Supreme Court ruled that the NFL’s arbitration clause does not apply to Gruden.

But Prasad has also had strong backing from health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who supports his work scrutinizing COVID-19 vaccines. Steelers will sit QB Aaron Rodgers, other starters in preseason opener against Jacksonville

Aaron Rodgers won’t make his Steelers debut in Pittsburgh just yet. Coach Mike Tomlin says Rodgers and other top starters will sit out the preseason opener against Jacksonville. Tomlin believes their experience means they don’t need as much preseason action. Rodgers, who joined the Steelers in June, was open to playing but Tomlin feels it’s unnecessary for now. The first-team offense struggled early in training camp but has improved. Rookie quarterback Will Howard is out with a hand injury. The Steelers signed Logan Woodside, a backup with ties to Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, to take some of the reps while Howard recovers.
