Bullet was fired into Chiefs coach Andy Reid’s office in May 2024 while he was inside

Authorities say multiple bullets were fired at the Kansas City Chiefs practice facility in May 2024, with one entering coach Andy Reid’s office while he was inside. No one was injured. The Kansas City Star reported Wednesday that Reid was working alone when a bullet broke through the window and lodged in a wall. The team installed bulletproof glass afterward. Two more bullets hit the facility. Police are investigating the incident as aggravated assault. Chiefs president Mark Donovan said Thursday the organization cooperated with authorities and emphasized safety for staff and fans. No arrests have been made.

The NCAA recently raised the FBS entry fee to $5 million, but both schools see long-term advantages. Raiders star Crosby calls Chiefs’ Mahomes the ultimate competitor, a big reason for his success

Maxx Crosby has been meeting star athletes like Kevin Garnett and Steve Smith Sr. lately, which made him think about Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Crosby calls Mahomes the “ultimate competitor.” Crosby and Mahomes aren’t best friends, but they respect each other as fierce rivals. Crosby has sacked Mahomes six times in 12 games, but the Chiefs have won eight of the last nine. Mahomes has led the Chiefs to five Super Bowls and three championships. Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy says Mahomes’ drive to win is unmatched. Mahomes believes in constant improvement to stay ahead in the NFL.

Mahomes, Chiefs starters to play in preseason opener against Cardinals

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is excited to play with the starters in the preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals. Mahomes believes getting hit helps him prepare mentally for the season. Coach Andy Reid plans to have each quarterback play a full quarter, with Mahomes starting on Saturday. The Chiefs are eager to see their new offensive line, especially first-round pick Josh Simmons at left tackle. There’s also competition for wide receiver spots due to injuries. Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon is taking a similar approach, planning to play starters, including quarterback Kyler Murray, in the preseason.

Travis Kelce’s transformation: Chiefs star trims down, gears up for another Super Bowl run

Travis Kelce has trimmed down considerably since last season, and it has been noticeable in the way he’s been making plays in training camp. Chiefs coach Andy Reid describes the four-time All-Pro tight end as “svelte.” Some had speculated a Super Bowl loss to Philadelphia in February might drive Kelce to retire, but instead he seemed to double down on his efforts. He is leaner, quicker and more athletic than he has been in years. And he’s showing as much focus as ever on the football field, despite the number of side projects vying for his time and attention. The goal, he said, is clear: Win another Super Bowl.

Chiefs’ Rashee Rice says he has ‘completely changed’ after causing dangerous crash on Dallas highway

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice says he has “completely changed” after a crash last year on a Dallas highway. The accident left multiple people injured and cost him more than $1 million in a settlement. Rice also was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years of deferred probation. He spoke about the incident Saturday for the first time during training camp. Rice also missed most of last season because of a knee injury. The Chiefs are preparing for a possible NFL suspension, but Rice is focused on returning to the field and contributing to the team.

Nine pitchers, one shutout: How the Royals made history against the Braves with a 1-0 victory

The Kansas City Royals have made history by using nine relievers to achieve a 1-0 shutout against the Atlanta Braves. That ties a major league record set by Cleveland in 2016. Sam Long secured the win by escaping a jam in the 10th inning. Salvador Perez then hit a single to score MJ Melendez for the victory. Injuries to the starting rotation forced Royals manager Matt Quatraro to rely on the bullpen, which delivered an outstanding performance. They combined to allow five hits and one walk while striking out 10.

Chiefs press on with stadium negotiations on both sides of the Kansas-Missouri state line

The Kansas City Chiefs are negotiating stadium deals with lawmakers in Kansas and Missouri, raising questions about their future at Arrowhead Stadium. The team recently received an extension on a Kansas financing package, signaling a possible move from Missouri. Meanwhile, Missouri has offered funding, including bonds and tax credits, to keep the Chiefs. Both states are competing to secure the franchise. Arrowhead’s lease expires in 2031. Chiefs owner Clark Hunt is weighing renovation or building a new enclosed stadium. The Kansas City Royals, sharing the current complex, plan to build a ballpark elsewhere.

Kiké Hernández hit a two-run homer and Will Smith also went deep to send the Dodgers to a rain-delayed 5-1 victory over the Royals on Sunday. Justin Wrobleski tossed six innings of three-hit ball in place of opener Lou Trivino, and Kirby Yates and Jack Dreyer finished off the dominant performance by the Los Angeles bullpen. Kris Bubic allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over five innings for Kansas City. Both teams paid homage to the Negro Leagues, whose museum sits less than 10 miles from Kauffman Stadium. The Dodgers wore hats from their Brooklyn days out of respect for Jackie Robinson, who played for the Kansas City Monarchs. The Royals wore the Monarchs’ hats.

Chiefs seek extension for Kansas stadium financing, raising possibility of move across state line

The Chiefs have requested an extension to the end-of-June deadline for a stadium financing package from the state of Kansas in a letter to the Kansas Senate president. The request Thursday is an indication that the NFL franchise’s potential move across the state line from Missouri is a legitimate possibility. Many believed that once Missouri lawmakers approved a financing package earlier this month, the Chiefs would ultimately renovate Arrowhead Stadium. But the deal from Kansas lawmakers may prove too lucrative to pass up. Donovan says there has been “significant progress” on plans for a new domed stadium, team headquarters, practice facility and mixed-use entertainment district.

Travis Kelce’s decision to return for another season with Chiefs wasn’t much of a decision at all

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce said Wednesday that he never seriously considered retirement after last year’s loss to Philadelphia in the Super Bowl. Once the emotions died down, the four-time All-Pro realized he still had something to prove. In fact, Kelce seemed to indicate after the second day of the Chiefs’ mandatory three-day minicamp that playing the 2026 season isn’t entirely out of the question. But for now, his focus is firmly on the upcoming season, and getting back to the big game. That much was evident just by looking at Kelce, who dismissed claims that he had dropped about 25 pounds but was noticeably slimmer all the same.

Four-time All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce and Pro Bowl right guard Trey Smith, who skipped voluntary workouts after receiving the franchise tag, were present for the start of the Chiefs’ mandatory three-day minicamp Tuesday. Kansas City is coming off a lopsided loss to Philadelphia in the Super Bowl. Smith’s decision to attend was particularly noteworthy as he continues to seek a long-term contract with Kansas City. The sides face a mid-July deadline. If they are unable to come to an agreement, he would play the upcoming season on a one-year, $23.4 million deal.

The Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton had a pair of singles and three RBIs for Double-A Somerset in his first game this year, and New York manager Aaron Boone said that it was too early to tell when the slugger might return to the big leagues. Stanton had been sidelined since before spring training because of severe tendon injuries to both of his elbows. But he has been ramping up his work at the Yankees’ player development complex and Boone was optimistic the rehab assignment will not be long.

Jacpot! The Royals call up top prospect Jac Caglianone in the hopes of jump-starting their offense

The Kansas City Royals have called up top prospect Jac Caglianone, and he could make his big league debut on Tuesday night in St. Louis. They announced the move on Monday, one day after a second straight 1-0 game against Detroit. Kansas City has hit the fewest homers and scored the second-fewest runs in baseball, and the Royals hope that Caglianone can help to jump-start that anemic offense. In 50 games between Double-A and Triple-A this season, Caglianone has hit 15 homers and 56 RBIs with a .322 batting average. He was the sixth overall pick in last year’s first-year player draft.

Bryson DeChambeau’s wild ride: LIV Golf star gets taste of speed at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau got a taste of speed on Saturday, roaring around Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a two-seat IndyCar. It was the kind of thing that would have made the LIV Golf star nervous early in his career. But he says the success of his YouTube channel, which boasts nearly 2 million subscribers, has given him the confidence to do some outside-the-box things. Another one: Hitting tee shots off the Turn 2 terrace onto Brickyard Crossing, the golf course adjacent to the racetrack that winds four of its holes through the infield.

As Kyle Larson aims for ‘the Double,’ other IndyCar and NASCAR drivers ponder motorsports marathon

Kyle Larson will take another crack at “the Double” on Sunday by trying to complete every lap of the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. Tony Stewart is the only one to have pulled it off. But while attempts have been rare, that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of drivers interested in it. Two-time defending Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden, Team Penske teammate Scott McLaughlin and reigning IndyCar series champion Alex Palou all expressed some desire to give it a try this week. It takes some serious financial support, the backing of teams in both IndyCar and NASCAR, logistical help, and plenty of luck.

Josef Newgarden has beaten teammate Will Power in the finals of the Indianapolis 500 pit-stop challenge. It was a big boost to Team Penske, which was rocked after their two cars were found to have a part illegally altered ahead of qualifying. Newgarden is the two-time defending Indy 500 winner and Power also has won the race. Both will start in the last row of the 33-car grid on Sunday. The pit-stop challenge win was the second straight for Newgarden’s team and third overall, and it was the 20th for Team Penske dating back to its first in 1981.

Scott McLaughlin defended team owner Roger Penske and said he is more motivated than ever to win the Indianapolis 500 after a week of upheaval within his race team. Last weekend, a piece on the cars of teammates Josef Newgarden and Will Power was found to be illegally altered, leaving to severe penalties. The part in question was not on McLaughlin’s car. His punishment came in the form of the firing of three top Team Penske officials, one of whom served as his strategist. Throw in the fact McLaughlin wrecked his primary car in practice last weekend and there is a lot for him to overcome in the race on Sunday.

Indy 500 announces first grandstand sellout since 2016 with 350,000 expected for the race on Sunday

The Indianapolis 500 is sold out for the first time in nearly a decade. That means about 350,000 fans, or about 1 for every 1,000 people living in the U.S., will be at the historic racetrack for the 109th running of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” on Sunday. It also means the local TV blackout that has been in place since 1951 has been lifted so fans living in central Indiana will be able to watch the race live. The last sellout was in 2016 for the 100th running of the race. Indianapolis Motor Speedway president Doug Boles says general admission infield tickets are still available.

Reimagined and reopened museum at Indianapolis Motor Speedway aims to be more than just a museum

The rebuilt and recently reopened museum at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is more than just a bunch of old cars and artifacts hidden behind glass. It is an immersive experience designed to appeal to more fans — especially young ones — and better tell the story of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” It took nearly 18 months and cost more than $60 million to complete. But when it opened last month, it was met with rave reviews. The museum, tucked inside Turns 1 and 2 of the speedway, is preparing for its busiest week of the year. The 109th running of the Indianapolis 500 is Sunday.
