Eugenio Suárez says X-rays were negative after he was hit on index finger by pitch against Tigers

Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suárez hopes he avoided major injury when he was hit in the right index finger by a pitch late in a 5-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Suárez is a candidate to be traded to a contender. He was hit by a 95.6 mph sinker from Will Vest in the ninth inning Monday night. He immediately doubled over in pain and quickly left the field. Suárez says “the X-rays were negative” and he’s scheduled for more tests on Tuesday. He has 36 homers this season.

Raleigh hits 37th and 38th homers, Mariners end Skubal’s 3-month unbeaten streak with 12-3 romp

Cal Raleigh hit his 37th and 38th home runs to move within one of Barry Bonds’ 2001 record for homers before the All-Star break, and the Seattle Mariners beat Detroit 12-3 on Friday night to end Tarik Skubal’s three-month unbeaten streak. Raleigh — in the lineup as designated hitter — made it 5-3 on a solo shot in the eighth inning, then hit a grand slam in a seven-run ninth. Skubal (10-3) was 10-0 with a 1.62 ERA in 16 starts since losing 3-2 to the Mariners in Seattle on April 2. He allowed four runs on four hits and two walks in five innings, striking out five. Luis Castillo (6-5) got the win, giving up three runs in five innings.

Mariners’ Cal Raleigh breaks AL record with 38 homers before the All-Star break

Cal Raleigh hit his 37th and 38th home runs in Seattle’s 12-3 victory over Detroit on Friday night to move within one of Barry Bonds’ 2001 major league record for homers before the All-Star break. Raleigh hit a solo homer off former teammate Tyler Holton in the eighth to tie the American League record of 37 set by Reggie Jackson in 1969 and matched by Chris Davis in 2013. Raleigh hit a grand slam off Brant Hurter in the ninth. Seattle has two games left in Detroit before the break.

Junior Caminero homers, scores twice to help the Rays end the Tigers’ winning streak

First-time All-Star Junior Caminero homered and scored twice and the Tampa Bay Rays beat Detroit 7-3 on Wednesday to end the major league-leading Tigers’ winning streak at five games. Down 3-2 after five innings, the Rays scored four times in the sixth and Caminero led off the seventh with his 22nd homer — a blast over the Detroit bullpen in left. The Rays broke it open against reliever Chase Lee in the sixth. With two out and a runner on second, Lee replaced Brant Hurter (4-1) and allowed four straight run-scoring hits, including doubles by Ha-Seong Kim and Danny Jansen. Zack Littell (8-7) allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings for the Rays.

Pirates reliever Dennis Santana: Fan ‘crossed a line’ prior to confrontation

Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Dennis Santana was involved in an altercation with a fan who ‘crossed the line’ during the second game of Thursday’s doubleheader with the Detroit Tigers and at one point was seen leaping and swiping at the person. Santana declined to disclose what the fan said. In videos posted to social media, Santana can be seen pointing out the fan to a police officer before jumping and swinging at the person who is in the front row above the Pittsburgh bullpen at Comerica Park. Santana was escorted away by Pirates bullpen personnel and held back by a teammate.
