The other Alaska airlift: Volunteers save dogs from a flooded Alaska village, 1 tiny plane at a time

A nonprofit in rural Alaska is working to rescue dogs from Kipnuk, a village hit hard by Typhoon Halong. The closest pet shelters are 90 miles away in Bethel, which is serving as a flood relief hub. Organizers with Bethel Friends of Canines began chartering flights when they learned that up to 100 dogs might be left behind as people were evacuated. Many pet owners want their dogs back but need time to prepare temporary lodgings. The rescue effort is ongoing, with more dogs expected to be reunited with their families.

From bombs to glass: Hanford site can now transform nuclear waste

The Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington state produced plutonium for most of America’s nuclear arsenal through the end of the Cold War. Now it’s turning nuclear waste into a much safer substance: glass. State regulators on Wednesday issued the final permit required to allow workers at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation add radioactive and chemical waste to the glass. It’s taken from often-leaky underground tanks, mixed in a crucible with additives, and heated above 2,000 degrees. The liquid then cools into solid glass — still radioactive — but far more stable for storage and less likely to seep into the soil or the nearby Columbia River.

Suspect in Seattle home invasions of Macklemore and celebrity athletes pleads not guilty

A man accused of breaking into the homes of Seattle-area celebrities and pepper-spraying people he encountered inside has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges. He appeared in court on robbery charges related to the violent robbery of musician Macklemore’s home in June. Patrick Maisonet was arrested in August on unrelated robbery charges and pleaded not guilty. Police say Maisonet and accomplices used bear spray on Macklemore’s 22-year-old nanny before stealing sports memorabilia. He’s also charged with the violent break-in at Ichiro Suzuki’s home in February and football player Richard Sherman, in March. Other alleged burglaries occurred while celebrity athletes were away.

Federal judge ends 13-year oversight of Seattle Police Department after use-of-force reforms

A federal judge has returned full control of policing practices to the Seattle Police Department. On Wednesday, the judge approved a request to end over a decade of oversight aimed at addressing excessive force by officers. The Department of Justice found in 2011 that Seattle officers used too much force, too quickly. A consent decree was established in 2012 to address these issues. The ruling marks a new chapter for the department, giving it full autonomy over policing decisions. The DOJ described this as the “successful completion” of the 13-year consent decree. The department has expanded training and rerouted some 911 calls to civilian first responders.

Seattle NHL team’s mascot has a close encounter with a brown bear during video shoot in Alaska

A Seattle Kraken ice hockey player and the team’s mascot had a close call with a brown bear during a video shoot in Alaska. The run-in happened during a flyfishing outing in late June near Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park, nearly 300 miles southwest of Anchorage. Video shows the bear charging toward the mascot named Buoy and player John Hayden. But the bear turns away before making contact. The NHL team said there was no intent to involve the bear in filming, but it later posted footage of the encounter on social media. Brown bears commonly feast on salmon in the river.
