Scheffler loses twice more to become the first US player to be 0-4 through 4 sessions at a Ryder Cup

Scottie Scheffler has had no answers this week at Bethpage Black. The world’s No. 1-ranked player lost twice more on Saturday to become the first U.S. player to lose in each of the first four sessions of the Ryder Cup, a big reason Europe has a commanding 11 1/2 to 4 1/2 lead. England’s Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood rallied after Scheffler briefly had his only lead of the day in a 3-and-2 victory. No one — much less the No. 1 player in golf — has ever started a Ryder Cup 0-4 under the current format that dates to 1979.

Scottie Scheffler goes 0-2, the worst first day at the Ryder Cup for a world No. 1 since Tiger Woods

No. 1 in the world is 0-2 at this Ryder Cup, and Scottie Scheffler had the worst first day by a top-ranked player since Tiger Woods. Scheffler lost again in foursomes — and as always in that format at the Ryder Cup, lost badly — in the morning with Russell Henley, then went back out with U.S. Open champion J.J. Spaun for a loss in fourballs in the afternoon. By himself, Scheffler is winning more often than anyone in golf. But his teams were behind nearly throughout both his matches Friday, and with Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau both going 0-2, the Americans trailed Europe 5 1/2 to 2 1/2 overall.

New Yorkers relish their sports and are ready to be loud and liquored up at their beloved Bethpage

New York sports fans have been starved for something to celebrate. They poured out of Madison Square Garden onto the streets and snarled city traffic in May, all because the Knicks simply got out of the second round of the NBA playoffs. They’re already resigned to the Giants and Jets being bad, aware the Yankees and Mets might not be good enough. They need a team to pin their hopes on. The U.S. one playing in the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, a place revered by locals in ways no arena ever could, will be it.

Tennis fans line up to get into Arthur Ashe Stadium to watch Jannik Sinner, of Italy, and Carlos Alcaraz, of Spain, play in the men's singles final of the U.S. Open tennis championships, Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025, in New York. (AP Photo/Yuki Iwamura)

Fans remain stuck in line as US Open final begins because of extra security with Trump attending

Fans enduring a lengthy wait to get into the U.S. Open final booed and chanted “Let us in! Let us in!” when the match between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner began after a delay. With extra security measures in place at Flushing Meadows because President Donald Trump was watching the match from a suite inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, the U.S. Tennis Association pushed back the start of the match a half-hour from its original 2 p.m. EDT time. But thousands of fans were still far from the entrance to the arena when play eventually began.

Aryna Sabalenka wins the US Open again after vowing to no longer lose control of her emotions

Before Aryna Sabalenka could win the U.S. Open again, she needed to understand why she lost two Grand Slam finals this year. She couldn’t put away Madison Keys at the Australian Open in January, then couldn’t finish off Coco Gauff at the French Open in June. Sabalenka realized it was because she was allowing bad thoughts to undo her good tennis. She vowed while vacationing in Greece after Wimbledon that would no longer happen. Sabalenka beat Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 7-6 (3) on Saturday to become the first repeat champion at the U.S. Open since Serena Williams won three in a row from 2012-14.

President Donald Trump will watch the US Open men’s final from Rolex’s suite, AP source says

A person with knowledge of the details says President Donald Trump will watch the U.S. Open men’s final from Rolex’s suite in Arthur Ashe Stadium. Trump’s first appearance at the Grand Slam tournament in New York since 2015 will be Sunday as a guest of the Swiss watchmaker, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because those plans were not publicly revealed. Sunday’s match between No. 1 Jannik Sinner and No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz is the latest high-profile sporting event for Trump.

Jannik Sinner takes his US Open title defense into the semifinals by beating Musetti

Jannik Sinner returned to the U.S. Open semifinals by beating No. 10 Lorenzo Musetti 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in the first all-Italian matchup in a men’s major quarterfinal. The No. 1 seed continued what’s been an easy title defense and on Friday will face No. 25 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, who beat No. 8 Alex de Minaur 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5, 7-6 (4) earlier Wednesday. Sinner is into his fifth straight Grand Slam semifinal and with a win Friday would reach the finals of all four majors this year. He has won 26 consecutive matches in majors on hard courts. That includes the past two Australian Open titles along with his triumph in New York a year ago.

Sinner back in US Open quarters by routing Bublik, only player besides Alcaraz to beat him in 2025

Jannik Sinner dominated the only player other than Carlos Alcaraz who has defeated him this season, routing Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 on Monday night to return to the U.S. Open quarterfinals. The top-seeded Sinner’s victory took just 1 hour, 21 minutes, the second-shortest completed match in the tournament. A first-round victory for Tomas Machac was a minute shorter. Sinner lost to Bublik in June in Halle, Germany, in a warm-up tournament before Wimbledon, but that was played on a grass court. Sinner has won 25 straight Grand Slam matches on hard courts, including the last two Australian Open titles along with his first U.S. Open trophy last year.

Ben Shelton out of the US Open after injuring shoulder against Mannarino

Ben Shelton quit during his third-round match at the U.S. Open on Friday because of a left shoulder injury. The No. 6-seeded Shelton, a two-time major semifinalist, stopped right after dropping the fourth set against Adrian Mannarino to force a fifth. The injury was perhaps caused when he landed on his left arm after tracking down a ball in the corner on the final point to win the third set. But early in the fourth, the 2023 U.S. Open semifinalist began wincing and said to his coach’s box: “I did something to my shoulder. I don’t know what it is.”

Novak Djokovic shakes off a back problem and reaches the 4th round of the US Open at 38

Novak Djokovic shook off a back problem early in the match to beat Cam Norrie on Friday night and at 38 become the oldest man to reach the fourth round of the U.S. Open since Jimmy Connors was the same age in 1991. Djokovic pulled away to win 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-3, helped by hitting 18 aces. The 24-time Grand Slam needed medical attention near the end of the first set. But he recovered to reach the last 16 of a major for the 69th time, matching Roger Federer for most ever, and will next face German qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff.

Need a vacation? Imagine how US Open tennis players feel during their long season

When the professional tennis tours moved to North America for the tournaments leading into the U.S. Open, Aryna Sabalenka was on vacation. The defending champion in New York skipped an event in Montreal and instead went to Greece because she said she needed a break. Many players understand. Their sport’s season is so long, and the offseason so short, that they don’t wait until the end of the year to chill. Sometimes, they figure, vacation must come during the season. In team sports, there is an ample offseason, so players have time to travel and rest. But for some tennis players, theirs is barely a month.

US Open tennis champs Alcaraz, Federer and Nadal love golf. Golfers say the tennis stars have game

Carlos Alcaraz used his racket to pantomime using a club on the course after his first victory at this year’s U.S. Open. Perhaps that was a nod to one of the fans in the stands at Arthur Ashe Stadium, golf star Rory McIlroy. Plenty of athletes eyeing a trophy on the hard courts of New York, including the man Alcaraz beat in the 2022 final, Casper Ruud, and 2024 runner-up Jessica Pegula, are swapping fuzzy yellow tennis balls for dimpled white golf balls as a way to relax. So are past greats such as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Swift start: Iga Swiatek easily wins at US Open, but she’s here to talk about Taylor and Travis

Iga Swiatek had an easy start to her quest to win the U.S. Open and Wimbledon in the same year, needing just an hour to beat Emiliana Arango 6-1, 6-2. But most of the talk in her news conference was about Taylor Swift’s engagement to Travis Kelce. Swiatek has been a devoted Swiftie for more than a decade, getting a handwritten note from the singer while attending an Eras Tour concert shortly after winning the 2024 French Open. A second title for the 2022 champion at Flushing Meadows would make the 24-year-old from Poland the first woman to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in the same year since Serena Williams in 2012.

Medvedev taunts booing crowd, rips chair ump during wild US Open meltdown

Daniil Medvedev’s match was delayed more than six minutes between points Sunday night, after a photographer entered the court on match point and the 2021 U.S. Open champion became enraged by the chair umpire’s decision to award his opponent a first serve. Benjamin Bonzi had just hit his first serve leading 5-4 in the third set after winning the first two. After he missed it, a photographer left his position before the Frenchman could hit his second. Chair umpire Greg Allensworth told the photographer to get off the court, then announced that Bonzi would get another first serve because of the delay — which is common in tennis. Medvedev then approached the chair to complain about the decision and the booing began.

Alcaraz and Djokovic could get early US Open tests. Venus Williams draws No. 11 seed Muchova

Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic will face potential difficult American opponents when they begin their quest for another U.S. Open title. Venus Williams, meanwhile, returns to the event at age 45 against No. 11 seed Karolina Muchova, a past French Open finalist who has reached the semifinals in New York the past two years. That was one of the early highlight matches after the draws were conducted Thursday for the men’s and women’s singles tournaments. Those begin Sunday, a day earlier than in the past. Alcaraz, the No. 2 seed, starts against Reilly Opelka. Djokovic will face Learner Tien, who made to the fourth round at this year’s Australian Open.

Errani and Vavassori win revamped US Open mixed doubles to defend their title

Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori defended their U.S. Open mixed doubles title Wednesday night, keeping a traditional team on top of a revamped event filled with singles stars. The Italians beat No. 3 seeds Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud 6-3, 5-7 (10-6), winning four matches over two days to earn $1 million – a huge raise over their earnings in New York last year in a format that looked nothing like this one. Errani and Vavassori were among the many critics of the changes to the event that shut out every other traditional doubles pairing, but had nothing but smiles inside a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium.

New US Open mixed doubles tournament begins and 4 teams are already halfway to the $1 million prize

The new U.S. Open mixed doubles tournament drew plenty of criticism for everything from its format to its field. With mostly singles players, some who rarely play doubles at all, it felt less like a Grand Slam championship than an exhibition — which is what one player referred to it as Tuesday. It’s a fast-pace event, with shorter matches and a smaller field, and the final four is already set. Whoever wins the trophy and a $1 million prize Wednesday night won’t apologize for how they got it.

Katie Taylor beats Amanda Serrano for a third time to remain undisputed 140-pound champion

Katie Taylor beat Amanda Serrano for the third time, winning a majority decision to remain the undisputed 140-pound champion. Taylor won by scores of 97-93 on two judges’ cards, while the third had it even at 95-95. It was the third straight narrow decision between the two, after Taylor won a split decision in their first bout and a narrow unanimous decision in the rematch. Back in Madison Square Garden, site of their first bout in April 2022, Taylor improved to 25-1 in a fight that perhaps wasn’t as exciting as their first two, but once again was almost too close to call.

Boxing takes over US Open tennis venue with Berlanga and Stevenson headlining

Just as Wimbledon is winding down, action at the home of the U.S. Open will heat up. Boxing action, that is. Swinging rackets will be replaced by swinging fists Saturday night when the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center hosts boxing for the first time. Edgar Berlanga and Shakur Stevenson headline the show in separate bouts on the card, which sends both locally based fighters to a place they’d never visited before. The fights will be in Louis Armstrong Stadium, the No. 2 venue on the grounds.

Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano meet for third time in their historic women’s boxing rivalry

Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano have fought twice, two of the best and most significant events in women’s boxing history. They return to Madison Square Garden, site of their first bout, on Friday night to headline the first all-women’s card at the arena. It’s the expected conclusion to a rivalry that has elevated their sport, created opportunities that never previously existed for female fighters, and so far has delivered everything except a Serrano victory. Taylor will defend her 140-pound titles against Serrano, who has won titles in seven weight classes. The 2012 Olympic gold medalist from Ireland won close decisions in both previous fights.
