Chargers’ Najee Harris cleared for full-contact practice after eye injury with opener looming

Najee Harris has been cleared for full-contact practice, making him a possibility for the Los Angeles Chargers’ season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday in Brazil. Harris injured his eye in a July 4 fireworks mishap, which kept him off the field during training camp. On Monday, Harris said his vision wasn’t affected and described the injury as “superficial.” Coach Jim Harbaugh said Harris has “looked really good in practice.” Harris has never missed a game in his NFL career. Wide receiver Quentin Johnston has also cleared concussion protocol and appears ready to play Friday.

Shohei Ohtani gets more unpredictable with his pitches and earns his 1st win for the Dodgers

Shohei Ohtani’s reliance on his fastball caught up with him recently, making the Los Angeles Dodgers’ two-way superstar intent on changing his pitch mix. He had given up a combined nine runs and 14 hits in his two previous outings, a pair of Dodgers losses to the Los Angeles Angels, his former team, and the Colorado Rockies. Making his 11th start as he returns from elbow surgery two years ago, Ohtani struck out a season-high nine over five innings in a 5-1 victory against the Cincinnati Reds for his first win on the mound with the Dodgers. Shohei Ohtani gets first victory with Dodgers, striking out season-high 9 against Reds

Shohei Ohtani struck out a season-high nine in five innings for his first victory for the Dodgers as Los Angeles beat Cincinnati 5-1 on Wednesday night to become the first team to sweep the Reds this season. The Dodgers won their fourth straight game and extended their NL West lead to two games over San Diego. Ohtani (1-1) bounced back against the Reds in his 11th start of the season and first in which he went the minimum five innings to qualify for a win. The victory was his first since Aug. 9, 2023, with the Angels against San Francisco. The two-way star allowed one run and two hits while walking two. At the plate, he was 1 for 5 with a run.

V of K-pop sensation BTS has thrown the ceremonial first pitch at a Los Angeles Dodgers game. He met with two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani before taking the mound on Monday night. The singer, whose given name is Kim Taehyung, bowed slightly to Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who caught a strike from the left-hander. BTS fans screamed throughout V’s time on the field. V and Ohtani briefly hugged in the team’s dugout before the game. BTS is set to release a new album next spring, following their break due to mandatory military service in South Korea.

NL West race heats up as Dodgers tie Padres for lead

The San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers have found themselves in a tight race in the NL West. The Padres came into Dodger Stadium on Friday night with a one-game lead over the Dodgers. This was the latest the Padres had led the division since September 2010. The Dodgers had been in first place since April 27. The Dodgers won 3-2, snapping a four-game losing streak and tying for first place. The Padres’ five-game winning streak ended. The teams meet five more times over the next nine days. Both managers are focused on playing well and moving past previous tensions.

Mookie Betts had a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the third inning, Teoscar Hernández homered and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat San Diego 3-2 on Friday night to tie the Padres atop the NL West. After three straight hits to open the third, the Dodgers tied it at 1 when Shohei Ohtani grounded into a fielder’s choice to second that scored Michael Conforto. Betts’ sacrifice fly to center scored Alex Freeland before Ohtani was caught stealing to end the inning. Hernández homered 400 feet to center off Jeremiah Estrada in the seventh for a 3-1 lead. The Dodgers ended a four-game skid and the Padres’ five-game winning streak. Clayton Kershaw (7-2) was the winner. Jack Dreyer got the final out for his second save.

Chargers OL Rashawn Slater’s season-ending injury ‘a gut punch,’ Jim Harbaugh says

Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams has retired from the NFL at age 30. His agent informed the team Wednesday, just before training camp began Thursday. Williams signed a one-year deal in March but was placed on the physically unable to perform list Monday due to an undisclosed injury. Williams played eight NFL seasons, including stints with the Jets and Steelers, and had 330 career receptions and 32 touchdowns. Known for his leadership, he was a key player for the Chargers.
