Orioles beat the Padres 4-3 after All-Star reliever Jason Adam ruptures a quadriceps tendon

Dylan Beavers singled home the go-ahead run with two outs in the seventh inning, two batters after All-Star reliever Jason Adam collapsed in pain on the mound, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the San Diego Padres 4-3. San Diego has lost six of eight and dropped 2 1/2 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Adam was carted off the field after rupturing a left quadriceps tendon when he tried to turn toward Gunnar Henderson’s chopper that went off the mound for an infield single. The right-hander immediately signaled for an athletic trainer and grabbed his left knee. He said he expects to miss the rest of the season.

Padres reliever Jason Adam carted off field with ruptured quadriceps tendon

Padres reliever Jason Adam ruptured a tendon in his left quadriceps and was carted off the field Monday, a major blow to San Diego’s dominant bullpen. Adam was injured in the seventh inning of a 4-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. One of several All-Star relievers on the team, Adam said he still needs to get an MRI for confirmation, but he expects the injury to end his season. Adam collapsed as he tried to turn toward Gunnar Henderson’s chopper that went off the mound for an infield single. He immediately signaled for an athletic trainer and grabbed his left knee. The right-hander took the loss against Baltimore and is 8-4 with a 1.93 ERA in 65 appearances.

Machado homers and hits go-ahead sac fly as the Padres beat the Pirates 6-4

Manny Machado homered in the first inning and hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in a four-run seventh for the San Diego Padres, who rallied past the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 to take two of three games in their series. Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run shot to tie Roberto Clemente for third place on Pittsburgh’s career list with 240 homers. Adam Frazier also went deep to give the Pirates a 4-1 lead in the fourth. Gavin Sheets slammed face-first into the wall while tracking Frazier’s homer and left the game.
