Phillies ace Zack Wheeler needs additional surgery, is out for the rest of the season

Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler’s season is over. The Phillies say Wheeler has been diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome and will require additional surgery that’s expected to sideline him for six to eight months. That could threaten his availability for the start of the 2026 season. The 35-year-old right-hander, who leads the National League with 195 strikeouts and was considered a Cy Young candidate, had surgery Monday to remove a blood clot from his upper right arm. While the loss is a blow to Philadelphia’s World Series hopes, team officials remain optimistic about their pitching depth and Wheeler’s eventual return.

Wheeler, who made his third All-Star team last month, is 10-5 with a 2.71 ERA in 24 starts this season. He has a major league-high 195 strikeouts in 149 2/3 innings. Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper remains day-to-day as he continues to recover from a bruised right elbow, leaving his return to the lineup uncertain. Harper’s elbow, which underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022, remains a sensitive area. Harper plans to wear a protective guard on his right elbow upon his return.
