Baltimore Orioles rookie right-hander Brandon Young had to move past his last start. In dropping to 0-6, Young saw his ERA increase to 6.70 through the first 10 starts of his major league career after allowing six runs over three innings against the Athletics on Aug. 9. Young bounced back and nearly made history on Friday night. The 26-year old was four outs from throwing the first perfect game in Orioles history before former teammate Ramon Urias’ bouncer to the left of the mound spoiled his bid.

Orioles right-hander Young loses bid for perfect game in 8th inning in 7-0 win over the Astros

Baltimore rookie right-hander Brandon Young lost his bid for the first perfect game in Orioles history with four outs remaining Friday night in a 7-0 win over the Houston Astros. Young retired the first 23 batters he faced, only to have his shot at history end on slow grounder to the third base side by Houston second baseman Ramon Urìas. With two outs in the eighth inning, Urìas, facing the Orioles for the first time since being traded last month, hit a 56 mph grounder between the mound and third base line. Young fielded the ball, but his off-balanced throw sailed wide of first base. Urías was awarded an infield single.

Orioles right-hander Young loses perfect-game bid on infield single in the 8th inning vs Astros

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Brandon Young lost his bid for a perfect game against the Houston Astros on Friday night with two out in the eighth inning on an infield hit by Ramon Urias. Urias hit a slow dribbler toward third base side that Young fielded. Young grabbed the ball and threw wildly to first, and the play was ruled a single and an error. Young, who entered the game 0-6 with a 6.70 ERA through the first 10 starts of his MLB, struck out six through eight innings while throwing 93 pitches, 61 for strikes. Baltimore leads Houston 7-0.

Nick Kurtz of Athletics becomes 1st MLB rookie to hit 4 homers in a game, matches total base record

Nick Kurtz of the Athletics has become the first rookie in Major League Baseball history to hit four home runs in a game. He also matched the MLB record with 19 total bases against the Houston Astros on Friday night. Kurtz went deep in the second, sixth, eighth and ninth innings. He also doubled and singled on his 6-for-6 night to equal Shawn Green, who had four homers, six hits and 19 total bases for the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 23, 2002 at Milwaukee. It was the 20th four-homer game in major league history and second this season. Arizona’s Eugenio Suárez did it on April 26 against Atlanta.
