CUSTER, S.D. – Two men died in a single-vehicle ATV crash Monday evening, September 1, seven miles south of Custer.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol reports the crash occurred around 5:40 p.m. on Flynn Creek Road, near Herbert Draw. A 2023 Can-Am Maverick side-by-side was traveling southbound when the driver failed to negotiate a curve. The vehicle slid sideways on the gravel road, entered a ditch, and collided with a tree.
The driver, a 60-year-old male from Long Pine, Nebraska, and a 41-year-old male passenger from Ainsworth, Nebraska, both sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. They were both wearing seatbelts but were not using helmets.
The names of the victims have not been released pending notification of family. The South Dakota Highway Patrol, an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, is investigating the fatal crash in the Black Hills. All information is preliminary.
