BOX ELDER, S.D. – Amazon announced a $25,000 grant to the Black Hills Robotics Foundation during an event hosted Thursday at the Douglas School District.

The funding will support robotics teams in Douglas and Spearfish, helping students expand their skills in science, technology, engineering and math.

“We’re proud to announce a $25,000 grant to the Black Hills Robotics Foundation,” said Jamie Hjort, an Amazon representative.

Dean Allsopp, Amazon’s community engagement manager, emphasized the company’s commitment to robotics. “For Amazon, robots are super important and a huge part of our fulfillment network,” he said.

Jon Nelson, executive director of the Black Hills Robotics Foundation, accepted the grant on behalf of the organization, which supports youth robotics programs across western South Dakota.

Sen. John Thune also spoke at the event, highlighting the importance of innovation. “When it comes to technology, I’m excited about the prospects and the idea of America leading the way,” Thune said.

While Douglas School District hosted the announcement, the funds will go directly to the Black Hills Robotics Foundation to assist local students competing in robotics competitions.

The investment underscores Amazon’s broader outreach to encourage STEM education while strengthening the talent pipeline in South Dakota and beyond.
