Betty Lorraine (Fugleberg) Maltby

Betty Lorraine (Fugleberg) Maltby was born in Williston, North Dakota on April 4, 1940 to Hilda and Olaf Fugleberg, one of nine children. She was raised in the Williston area, going to school and graduating from Williston High School in 1958. After graduation she went to work at MDU for three years and became roommates with Katie Schumacher.

      During this time Betty met her future husband, Allan Joe Maltby. They got engaged when Betty was 21 and were married in 1962. They resided in Williston for three months before Joe was transferred to Aberdeen, SD where Betty went to work for REA. On February 8, 1963 Betty gave birth to their only son, Darin Michael Maltby and the following year, on February 19, 1964 their daughter, Deborah Lynn was born. Betty decided to quit working and become a fulltime mother, raising Darin and Debbie.

     When the children started school, Betty went back to work for Gibson’s in Aberdeen as a secretary. She remained there for 5 ½ years and then switched over to Dakota Farmer in 1975. Joe had been with Benson Optical for 17 years when he and Betty decided to relocate back to Williston.

     Betty started working at First National Bank in 1977, staying there for three years. Then the oil boom it, and Betty was offered a job at Guardian Inspection where she worked for the next 5 ½ years, until the company closed due to the oil industry plummeting. It was at this time that she and Joe decided to leave Williston and move to Spearfish, SD in 1986. Never one to sit still, Betty started out at Pioneer Bank & Trust, moving on to SD Cable in 1988, which became part of Midcontinent. She was promoted to Administrative Assistant to the manager, which necessitated a move to Rapid City. Betty retired after 17 years with the company.

     Betty and Joe loved the Black Hills. They did a lot of motorcycle riding in the Hills with their son Darin, and enjoyed numerous camping trips with their grandchildren. After 57 years of marriage, Joe passed away in 2019.

     Betty is survived by her only daughter, Debbie (Maltby) Berg and son-in-law, Steven Berg; sisters-in law, Jean and Delores Fugleberg; grandchildren, Adrian (Preston) Miller, Devon and Betty Maltby; step-grandchildren, Justin (Leah) Berg, Charissa (Allan) Schulte; great grandchildren, Seth Falcon, Hope, Haddie and Eve Miller; step great grandchildren, Bailey and Brody Berg, and Noah Schulte; along with many nieces and nephews.

     She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; beloved son, Darin; parents, Hilda and Olaf Fugleberg; and her eight sisters and brothers.

     Betty Lorraine Maltby, 84, Rapid City, SD, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2024 at Fountain Springs Healthcare, Rapid City.

     Memorial services will be held Saturday, December 14, 2024, 10:30 a.m. at Black Hills Funeral Home, Sturgis, SD. Inurnment will take place at Black Hills National Cemetery.
