Meade County Joins Task Force to Combat Online Crimes Against Children

STURGIS, S.D. — Meade County Sheriff Pat West has authorized the Meade County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. This MOU was approved by the County Commission at the October 28th Commission Meeting and establishes the sheriff’s office as an associate member of the ICAC Task Force and strengthens the county’s ability to investigate and prevent the online exploitation of minors. Under the MOU, the sheriff’s office and the ICAC Task Force will share resources and collaborate on investigations.


Pennington County and Vucurevich Foundation Partner for Rent Assistance

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Pennington County human services department and the John T. Vucurevich Foundation are joining forces to give up to $100,000 in rent assistance. The Pennington County Commission approved the funds at their meeting this week. Human Services Director Barry Tice says they wanted to make sure they had a plan in place should funding not be available. Anyone needing rental assistance can contact the department at 605-394-2156.


Rapid City Accepting Applications for Hotel BID #2 Board

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The City of Rapid City is accepting applications for members to be appointed and confirmed for the newly-created Hotel Business Improvement District #2 Board. A total of five members will be selected for the BID #2 Board with two members selected for two-year terms and three members serving three-year terms. Application deadline is 5 p.m. Wednesday, November 19 with interested citizens asked to submit a Citizen Interest Application online. The Hotel BID Board #2 has been established to fund marketing and promotion of the City for sporting events and to fund the construction, operation and maintenance of the new sports fieldhouse.


Pennington County Cuts Rapid City Library Funding

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Funding cuts are occurring at all levels of government, and Pennington County is no exception. One of the primary targets being the Rapid City Library, whose budget is slashed to one-sixth of its current rate. S.D.P.B. reports South Dakota’s second-largest local library serves a population area well beyond Rapid City limits, yet it wasn’t spared from the most recent round of municipal government cuts. The budget adjustment from just under $500,000 to about $80,000 came from the Pennington County Board of Commissioners and will primarily impact households outside of Rapid City limits.


Shipping delays expected after UPS cargo plane crash

NEW YORK (AP) — The UPS cargo plane crash on Tuesday at the company’s global aviation hub in Kentucky, which killed at least 12, will temporarily disrupt the supply chain and result in some shipping delays. But UPS says it has contingency plans in place and experts say the impact should be cleared up before the peak holiday season. The plane crashed about Tuesday evening as it was departing for Honolulu from UPS Worldport, UPS’ largest shipping hub, at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. Package sorting at the center was halted late Tuesday and the halt continued on Wednesday. Consumers who want to check on their UPS packages can wait to hear from the company or look up tracking details online.


FAA reducing air traffic by 10% across 40 ‘high-volume’ markets during government shutdown

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Aviation Administration says it plans to reduce air traffic by 10% across 40 “high-volume” markets beginning Friday morning to maintain safety during the ongoing government shutdown. The reduction stands to impact thousands of flights nationwide. Air traffic controllers have been working unpaid since the shutdown began Oct. 1. With some calling out of work, staffing shortages during some shifts have led to flight delays at a number of U.S. airports. Citing growing staffing pressures, FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said Wednesday that the agency would not wait for a crisis to act. He says a list of the affected markets will be released sometime Thursday.


France moves to suspend Shein’s online market over listings for illegal weapons and sex dolls

PARIS (AP) — France’s government has started a procedure to suspend access to online retail giant Shein until the company proves that its content conforms with French law. The Finance Ministry said authorities found illegal weapons and sex dolls with childlike features listed for sale on the fast-fashion giant’s website. The move came on the same day that Shein opened its first permanent store in Paris inside one of the city’s most iconic department stores. On Wednesday morning protesters camped outside the BHV department store, but crowds of shoppers turned out undeterred. Shein has pledged to work with French authorities to address any concerns swiftly.

NEW YORK (AP) — Tesla shareholders will decide soon on whether Elon Musk could have a shot at becoming the world’s first trillionaire. In an annual meeting at Tesla’s headquarters in Austin, Texas, they will vote Thursday on whether to approve a pay package that could hand the world’s richest man another $1 trillion in shares. The decision has become a flashpoint among Musk fans and detractors, with even the pope recently weighing in. Supporters say Musk is a miracle man who needs to money as a lure to focus on the company. Critics say the board that designed the package is too beholden to Musk and the pay is excessive.
