STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis Council met for their first meeting in November Monday night, and passed first reading of their 2026 budget.

The council has spent the past couple of months hearing from each department and their requests for the next budget cycle.

Sturgis Mayor Kevin Forrester says they have a structurally balanced budget.

Some of the biggest pieces of the budget include $6.4 million for public works, nearly $4.9 for public safety and $3.449 million for general government.

Forrester says the ambulance budget was also a big part of this year’s budget.

The total budget is $29,258,688 including all the multiple enterprise funds the city has. The general fund is funded primarily by sales tax and property tax.

Second reading of the budget is scheduled for November 17.
