The Story
The ancient tale follows the brave Antigone, who “dares death to bury her brother’s corpse against the decree of the King, her uncle Creon”. In a story about standing up to oppression, Antigone chooses to give her brother a rightful burial despite the cost, even in the face of her love for Creon’s son and a promising future.
This adaptation, first performed in German-occupied France, uses contemporary language and humor to bring the classic narrative to life.
The play is directed by Alexis Evon, who has previously directed She Kills Monsters and The Addams Family for BHCT. Evon, who previously acted as Ismene in the show approximately 15 years ago, describes the story as one of “insurmountable odds; of standing up for what is right, no matter the cost”.
The cast of local South Dakota actors includes Wynter Miller as Antigone, Scott Buchtel as Creon, and Isabelle Schild as Ismene. Other cast members are Paula Kennison as Nurse, Brady Jones as Haemon, Keturah King as Page, Selinas Vigil as Messenger, Angel Orenstein as Eurydice, and Victoria Fuller, Daleila Pearce, and Elizabeth Gabriella as Chorus. Merlyn Q. Sell, Hidie Dahl, and Karina Causey play the Guards.
Food Drive for Feeding South Dakota
In conjunction with the run of Antigone, Black Hills Community Theatre and the Performing Arts Center of Rapid City are hosting a food drive for Feeding South Dakota. Attendees who donate a sealed, non-perishable food item will receive a $2 off coupon for concessions. Peanut butter and jelly, canned chicken and tuna, and canned fruit and vegetables are items particularly needed. Donations will be collected at all performances throughout the run of the show.
