Cheryl Ann Blakeman, born September 20, 1959 in Sturgis, SD to Gordon Wayne Hanzlik and Mary Maxine (Chambers) Hanzlik. Cheryl, along with her identical twin sister, Sharon, completed the family. They joined brother Darwin, making for a busy household growing up.
Her family moved to Prescott, AZ while she was still a child. They then moved back to Sturgis when Cheryl was 10 years old. She graduated from Sturgis Brown High School in 1977. After high school, she attended college in Watertown for a short time. She then met and married James Schutterle on October 14, 1978. This union brought three children into their family. Cheryl and James later divorced in 1993, but they remained lifelong friends.
In 2012, Cheryl married Fred Blakeman. They made their home in Sturgis. Cheryl worked at Ft. Meade VA for 11 ½ years. She held various positions and took pride in her work. In 2004 she graduated from BHSU with a Bachelor of Science in Health Service Administration. Cheryl did not however work using her degree. Life had other plans for her. She devoted her life caring for her family.
There are so many words that could describe Cheryl…fierce, passionate, devoted and loving. Cheryl made sure everyone was taken care of and being Mom and Nana was her greatest accomplishment.
Cheryl departed this life on Friday, October 10, 2025 after a long battle with illness.
Left to cherish her memories are her children; Miranda (Glenn) Hudelson of Black Hawk, Matthew Schutterle of Black Hawk, Marcus (Nicole) Schutterle of Fromberg, MT, her husband; Fred, and her dog, Belle. Her pride and joy, her grandkids; Lillie, Hailey, Corie, Conner, Mason, Kody and Allie; brother, Darwin (Kim) Hanzlik of Newell, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. She is reunited in death with her mother, father and beloved sister, Sharon.
A memorial service has been planned for Monday, October 20, 2025 beginning at 2:00pm at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Burial will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery.
