Horse Killing Investigation Continues, $10,000 Reward Offered For Information

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is seeking public assistance and offering a $10,000 reward for information following the fatal assault of a horse near Pactola Reservoir in the Black Hills.

The investigation into the animal cruelty case is focused on an area near McCurdy Gulch Road, west of Rapid City. The horse was discovered deceased by its owners on the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 9.

Initial findings indicated the animal was assaulted with a shovel, resulting in its death.

The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is urging property owners along McCurdy Gulch Road to review any camera footage for unusual activity that may have occurred in the early morning hours of Oct. 9.

The horse’s owners are offering a $10,000 cash reward to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the crime.

Investigators are working with a Field Veterinarian from the South Dakota Animal Industry Board to examine the circumstances of the case.
